Chapter 10
Summoned
Things were going on and the emperor had summoned him. He hurried so as not to keep him waiting. The guards recognized him and waved him by as he headed to the door to Erak’s meeting room. Inside, Erak and Tomi were speaking to Torr and Kitty.
Everyone greeted him and he greeted them back. “We’ll leave for a while. I think it’s time for a second breakfast anyway.” Erak observed. They left the room letting him know this was something important.
“I’ve heard rumors, but I don’t know what you summoned me for.” Garulto admitted.
“Frick was a traitorous coward. He tried to come to a meeting with extra helpers and thought to burn me to death. Instead I got him, and my helpers got his extras. Nasty mess.”
He grinned. “I heard some of that. Never liked Frick and it goes without saying that Dori disliked him intensely. She has a list of those she refuses to work with and he’s number one.”
“She refused to change her mind. I guess she saw more than we did.”
“She gets a feeling for people and I’ve not known her to be wrong.”
“That kind of thing helps a queen.” Torr said.
“You’re right, Tomi has it too.”
“That’s not what I meant. I want you to take Frick’s place. You have the perfect partner to aid you.”
“What about Ranger?”
“It was between the two of you. I didn’t think he’d want it, not right now at any rate so I ask him if he wanted to be considered. He said you would do a great job. So, there you go. He thinks there will be another opening down the line when he’s ready to leave Earth.”
“Females will drive you crazy or make you perfectly happy. I’ll have to ask Dori. I can let you know in a day or two?”
“That’s fine. Davy and Jarel are trying to bring some order to the place. If you take it, I imagine Niku will take your place. A whole row of military will move up. Not that you should consider that.” Torr looked innocent.
“Of course not.” Garulto observed. “I’ll go home and see what she thinks.”
There was a time Torr might have teased him but Garulto thought Torr knew better now that he had his own mate. He went to the roof to fly home. It was about lunch time and when he landed something wonderful scented the air.
When he entered the house, Dori came to greet him, and he took her in his arms and swung her around. “Having a good day?” She asked.
“I haven’t decided yet. Torr made me an offer, but I need to ask you if we should accept it or not.”
“He offered you a kingdom?” She asked.
“Yes, he did. Frick was a traitor and was burned to death. No dragon can match the emperor, not even his brothers.”
“Do you want to take it?” She asked.
“I do, but only with you by my side. You would make it doable. Without you I don’t think I could handle it.”
“I know it was an adjustment for Tomi, but once she began to do her part, it got easier for Erak.” Dori observed.
“I won’t lie. It will be hard for a time while we undo the damage he did. His people are suffering because he was a poor king. But there is money and land there to work with. The people can be brought back to a good quality of life.”
“What’s going on now?”
“Jarel and Davy are there trying to get things started. I bet they are ready to go home.” He chuckled.
“We need a few days to get things here in order. We’ll rent out one of the houses and leave this one to take a break in. The baby can’t go with us, at least not right away.”
“Agreed. Can I tell him yes?”
