Logan’s eyes darted to hers. “You broke up?”
“I’m not sure.” She pressed her lips together.
His eyebrows squeezed together. “How can you not be sure?”
“We had a fight.”
“What about?” Logan shifted to face her and placed his hand flat on the hood behind her so his forearm was flush against her back.
Harper’s gaze drifted down from his eyes to his lips. “About you.” When her eyes met his again, she could practically see his mood shift.
“Harper,” he breathed. “You’re giving me hope.”
“I’m kind of hoping for something right now too.” She couldn’t stop staring at his mouth.
“Then ask me.”
She knew what he wanted her to say, but she still said, “Ask you what?”
He stared at her lips. “I won’t do it unless you ask.”
Tentatively, she reached up and ran her hand against his day-old stubble.
He lay his hand over hers and closed his eyes.
“Logan,” she whispered.
He opened his eyes and looked deep into hers with an intensity that took her breath away.
“Kiss me,” she breathed.
His lips landed hard against hers, hand holding the side of her head, fingertips digging into her scalp. The remainder of their sandwiches were abandoned to the ground as he kissed her until she was lightheaded. The world seemed to spin faster on its axis, like gravity had shifted and they might float right up off of the car hood.
She slid her hands around his waist and melted into him. There was no going back now. No way she could ever put Logan behind her. No way she could go forward without kissing him every day of her life.
His kisses slowed, and he leaned his forehead against hers. “I’ve missed you.” He pecked her nose.
“I’ve missed you too.”
“I can’t begin to tell you how much I regret leaving you. Running was what I’d always done. It was the only way I knew, and I’m so sorry, Harper.”
“I know,” she replied sadly.
He took her face in both hands. “You have to know I’d take it all back in a second if I could. If I could go back and do it all differently, I would tell you everything and let you help me raise Kayla.”
Harper nodded.
“I know my timing sucks, and I’m probably about to seriously jump the gun here, but it’s what I’m feeling, so I’m just gonna say it.” His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard. “I want you back, Harper. We belong together, and—”
“You have me.”
A slow grin spread across his face.
“You have me, Logan,” she repeated as she leaned in for another kiss.
He gladly reciprocated, lying back on the blanket until she was resting across his chest, tugging her hair from her signature bun and letting it fall all around them like a curtain.
“Don’t ever leave me again,” she whispered.
