“Go away!” Harper called through the door.

“I’m sorry I missed our coffee date,” Brett declared. “Can I come in and explain?”

“No way! What are you doing here? Are you out on bail already?” She thought she heard him chuckle, and it sent chills up her spine.

“Bail? Have you been drinking?” he asked.

“Just leave.”

“Open the door.” He pounded it twice, and Harper jumped.

“No! Leave, or I’ll call the cops.”

After ten seconds of silence, he spoke again. “I just want to talk.”

Harper scrambled for the pepper spray in her purse. “Take twenty steps back.”

“What?”

“Step away from the door.”

His laugh was muffled through the door. “Are you playing games with me?”

“Do it, or I’m not opening this door.” She held the spray behind her back with her left hand and her phone in her right.

“Is this far enough?” His voice was quieter than before.

She peeked through and saw that he was far back on her sidewalk, so she slowly opened the door.

He took two steps, and she held out her hand. “Stop right there!”

“What is the matter with you?” he asked.

“How could you do it?” She shook her head disgustedly.

“Stand you up? My flight was late getting in. I’m sorry. I would’ve called but my phone died.”

“You know that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about Logan.”

Brett’s brow furrowed. “What do you know?”

“Enough. I know what you did.”

“I’m sorry. I know it wasn’t very ethical, but I had to.”

Fury coursed through her veins. “Not ethical? That’s an understatement. It was downright criminal. And I never thought you had it in you to do something so horrible. You’re a lawyer. You’re supposed to be on the side of the justice system, not go against it.”

His brow furrowed. “I needed to know who you were getting involved with.”

She couldn’t keep talking around this anymore. “So you had his truck destroyed?”

“What?” His face went pale as a ghost.

“I know it was you, Brett. Don’t bother denying it.”

He was rendered speechless, which wasn’t normal for the usually eloquent lawyer.

“I went to see Logan’s food truck and found a wrapper from the gum I gave you. I know you were there.”
