“Because I’m not sure if I should tell him the truth or not.”

“The truth about?”

“Why I broke up with him.”

Jamie set the pint of ice cream on the end table and turned to face Shannon. She tucked her magenta-streaked brown hair behind her ears and rubbed her palms together. “Okay, this is gonna be good. Lay it on me.”

“I’d rather not talk about it.”

“Maybe you need to if it’s still eating you up ten years later.”

Shannon breathed in deeply and let out a heavy sigh. Only her family knew the reason. “I promise to tell you about it sometime, but for now, I just need you to talk me out of telling him.”

“Okay, whatever you do, don’t tell him.”

“Okay.”

“It would be a disaster.” She took a bite of ice cream.

Shannon nodded. “Right. It would.”

“It could bring up a lot of painful feelings.”

“Yes. Keep talking. This is working.”

Jamie eyed her. “Or …”

“What?”

“It could bring up other kinds of feelings. The really good kind.” Jamie raised her eyebrows up and down.

“Jamie!”

“I’m sorry, but whatever it is, I say tell him.”

“Not helping. Not good.”

“It can’t make things worse, right? You broke up years ago. And if he’s still hung up on you, maybe knowing will help him to move on.” Jamie tilted her head and gave Shannon a pointed look. “If that’s what you want him to do.”

“You suck at this.”

“Sorry. What can I say? You’ve been single for as long as I’ve known you. You need some action.” Jamie picked up the ice cream again and dug in.

Shannon rolled her eyes. She and Jamie could not have been more different when it came to guys.

It wasn’t like Shannon hadn’t tried to date after Micah left. She’d been on dates and had a couple brief relationships, but none ever lasted. They just weren’t Micah.

“On to a completely different—but very exciting—topic …” Jamie slurped ice cream from her spoon. “Vern wants to meet with us on Friday at eleven o’clock.” She bounced a little on the cushion. “Can you believe it? Our own studio space.”

“I know. I could kiss Simon for marrying Maggie and opening that shop with her in Hastings.”

“I’d kiss Simon.” Jamie winked.

“Maggie might have something to say about that.”

Jamie laughed. “They’re so cute together. I knew something was going to happen with them after Vegas.”

Shannon thought back to the Professional Wedding Photographers Convention they had all attended together. “Remember how much Maggie disliked him, and then we saw them kissing on the dance floor.”
