“Actually, the guys didn’t toss it.”
“They probably sold it or something, right?”
“No, they put it in a storage closet there at the restaurant. The whole thing kind of creeped them out.”
“Not enough to say no to taking the money, though, right?”
“Well, yeah, there’s that.” He shrugged his shoulders. “But your equipment is in the trunk of the Lexus.”
“What? Micah! Are you serious?”
He nodded.
Shannon threw her arms around his neck. “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”
He laughed and wrapped his arms around her.
Relief engulfed her. She loosened her hold on him and spontaneously pressed her lips against his.
His entire body stiffened.
She stepped away, astonished at herself. “I’m … I didn’t mean to—”
In a millisecond, his fingers threaded through her hair, and his lips were on hers.
Her knees went weak as warmth spread through her entire body. Micah was kissing her. It felt so familiar, so right. She slid her arms around his neck, slowly this time, slipping her fingers through his soft, blond hair, kissing him back with all the passion she’d buried. His arms wound around her, locking her securely against him, as his lips moved with hers, stirring a deep yearning within her she thought she’d never feel again. Oh, how she’d missed this. Him. It felt like no time had passed at all, their kisses transporting them back to happier times.
Lips slowed, foreheads touched, breaths mingled.
“Shannon.” His voice was deep and thick and sweet. “I’ve wanted to do that since I picked you up on the side of the road.”
“So have I,” she whispered.
“You have no idea how much I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too.”
His thumbs softly brushed her cheeks.
She wanted to kiss him again, but her situation hadn’t changed. She still had traitorous ovaries. And as good as they were together, this one very important detail she’d kept from him could break them apart forever. But, like Keely, didn’t he have the right to know everything? More and more, she felt like he did.
And then she remembered Autumn.
She stepped out of his arms and straightened her back. “We shouldn’t have done that. Your poor girlfriend. I feel awful right now.”
“You need to know something about me and Autumn. We’re not—”
Chase swept out of the room and past them just then. “I’m telling her,” he declared. “Wish me luck.”
Shannon lowered her head. Her heart ached for Keely. “What a nightmare.”
“You haven’t seen them together much.” Micah watched his friend walk to the opposite end of the hallway where the girls were. “They were meant for each other. They really were. And I know they’ll get through this. Even if they don’t get married today.”
“You think they’ll postpone?”
He shrugged his shoulders. “I guess that will be up to Keely.” Micah’s phone rang, and he glanced at it. “I have to take this. Please don’t go far. I want to talk more.”
Shannon nodded as he walked toward the exit. She grabbed her camera and wandered down the hallway toward the girls’ room as Chase and Keely walked out, her hand in his. Keely looked over at her with trepidation, and Shannon wished she could give her a hug to instill a little strength in her before Chase broke the news.
