“Huh?”

She pointed toward the other lane. “Just drop me off at the terminal.”

“What kind of boyfriend would I be if I let you carry your own bags in?”

“The fake kind.” She winked at him.

He laughed.

“Go talk to her.” She laid her hand on his arm. “Before your flight tonight. You know you want to.”

She knows me so well.

Chapter 23

When Shannon returned to her parents’, she found the family still gathered in the backyard, talking and laughing, enjoying the fresh air and each other’s company. Dréa seemed like one of the family already, chatting with Nana and Great Aunt Pauline like they’d known each other forever.

Shannon wandered over to stand behind her dad, who smiled up at her when she laid her hands on his wide, solid shoulders.

“I’m an on-air radio personality,” Dréa explained. “I’m on a morning show with another DJ on a Christian music channel.”

“Like that Delilah?” Nana asked.

They all laughed.

“Not really,” Dréa answered. “I don’t have my own show or the kind of following she has. Maybe someday.”

Dréa definitely had the voice for radio, and Shannon could see how her brother could fall in love with it and her so quickly. The whole family seemed enthralled with her too.

Shannon stared at Duncan until she finally made eye contact, tilting her head toward the house.

Duncan patted Dréa on the knee as he stood. She kept talking as he walked toward Shannon.

They went into the kitchen, and Duncan went straight for a tin of cookies and started munching on one of the chocolate chip variety.

“You slept with her?”

Shannon’s question caught him by surprise and caused him to choke on a chunk of cookie. She patted his back with little vigor, knowing he wasn’t actually choking.

“How could you do that and then get engaged to someone else in two months’ time?”

He coughed once more before his head fell forward in shame. “She told you.”

“Of course she told me. She’s heartbroken, Duncan. How did you think she would feel?”

His eyes shot to the back door. “Keep your voice down.”

“You didn’t tell your fiancée?”

He made a face at her.

“How could you, Duncan? Really, shame on you. I never thought you’d be that guy—hooking up and sneaking out before the sun comes up.” She wanted to scream at him, to tell him Jamie was pregnant, but she had to give Jamie a chance to give him that news.

“Is that what she said?” He shook his head adamantly. “I had to catch my plane.”

“No, she didn’t say you snuck out. I put the pieces together.”

“That’s not what happened at all. I stayed with her as long as I could. I didn’t want to leave her.”
