“At least it will solve one mystery.”
“How’s your undercover job going?” he asked.
“Sworn to secrecy,” I told him.
“That bad, huh?” he mocked.
“Gotta get Gretta in the loop somehow.”
“She up for fuckfests?”
I blew my cheeks out like a blowfish. I had a thing for Gretta since freshman year. We’re juniors now and she still acts like she doesn’t notice me. I liked her short, bright red hair, big blue eyes and tidy body and was keen to get to know her better. Honestly, that was only reason I volunteered for this gig to get closer to her, yet I hadn’t even got a damn date for my effort. I’m not as pushy and cocky as my roommates, in fact I mostly kept to myself, but being a gentleman definitely wasn’t working in my favor with her. I might have to change tactics. Maybe being an arrogant bully like Harrington will work, since he was the king of the hill before he got serious with Luca.
“I won’t be keen to see that,” I mumbled honestly.
“Ah. You hot on her?”
“Maybe.”
“She seems a little frigid to me, but then Lux managed to warm up the bookhugger quick smart, so maybe anything’s possible, if you know how to steer the horse correctly.”
I pondered on his words for a moment. “What the heck are you talking about?”
He snorted. “All I’m saying is Lux fucked an unfuckble chick ie the bookhugger, so maybe you could succeed with a thornback.”
“I’m sure she’s had boyfriends before,” I stated, although I’d never seen her with a guy. Maybe it’s because she’s always working. If she became my girl, she wouldn’t have to work so hard and I’d look after her real good. My family’s’ got a ton of money invested in buildings and land, my inheritance. My childless uncle wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, like me, in fact he didn’t even pass 10th grade but he was street smart, and he worked extremely hard and as soon as he could afford to buy property, he did and his portfolio grew from there.
My father wanted my life to be different, hence why I was sent to live with my aunt and uncle when I was a kid. I came back solely to attend college.
I can’t say I particularly like college as the only things I enjoy are football and party chicks, however, I turned into a stuttering fool when I’m around Gretta, so I tend to stay quiet. She probably thinks I’m born without a tongue.
“Maybe if there was a fuckfest organized you and Gretta could join in together,” he suggested. “You’d just have to find the right hole in all that spaghetti of bodies.”
“Are you serious? Are there several people all at it?”
“Dude, I saw it with my own eyes. Damn I wanted to take a pic, but they wouldn’t let me.” He took a long slurp of his beer and burped. “Have you asked for a job yet?”
“Not yet.”
“You can’t get into the circle of filth without a job, unless you’re chosen by some guy who wants to shove his piece of meat up your ass.”
I smirked. “Is that what happened to you?”
“Nah.”
“Then how do you know?”
“Someone told me.”
“You’re full of secrets Cody Harrington, just like you know nothing about Cam’s head getting smashed in, right?”
“Right.”
“So, that’s three deaths and one attempted murder, two attempted murders, if I count you throwing your baseball bat across Josh’s face. You looked like you wanted to kill him.”
“I did want to kill him since he tried to kill my best bud. Anyway what’s your point?”
“My point is there’ll be more empty rooms than occupied in the Vault soon. It kind of feels like someone is trying to take us down one man at a time.”
