Gretta

“Did you hear?” I asked Agent Delaney over the phone. “Did you hear the confession? Were the bugs working?”

“Yes. The only confession I heard was him confessing to killing your father.” The line went dead for a few beats. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Is that enough to make an arrest?”

“Yes, but we can’t do that until he confesses about the After Dark Club. We suspect…” she breathed out long and deep, “that he’s involved in other killings, but of women.”

My breath was whisked away and I started coughing from the grittiness in my throat.

“Are you okay?”

I took a sip of water, before answering. “Yes. Who are they? Who are the women?”

“Students at KVU.”

“Not that girl that was found naked in the bush on side of the road half eaten by rodents? The road that leads to Lake Superior?”

“Mathias has strong reasons to believe he was involved in her death.”

“What evidence does she have?”

“Particles found under her fingernails and in her hair. Remains of the second victim was cruelly FedEx to her boyfriend’s house.”

“That’s horrible.”

“That’s why I’ve decided to pull you out.”

“No. Please. Let me get the confession you want. Please.”

“It’s too dangerous.”

“He won’t kill me.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“I just know. I’m all you have.”

Silence.

“Look, I’m going back tomorrow night-”

“No, I forbid it.”

“I’ll get the confession.”

“Gretta, I don’t understand how you can feel safe in the arms of a likely murderer.”

I didn’t feel safe, but I felt desired and I longed to see him again. Which was really stupid considering what I was just told. “I have you and…”

“Your friends.”

“Yes.”

“Which are probably as much use as tits on a bull.”

“Luca is a fine shot with a rifle.”
