“Good to know.” She sighed again. She wasn’t finding this easy. “I’ve been working tirelessly for over two years to crack this case wide open?”

“I know.”

“Way before Mathias contacted me about the old photographs discovered in Fontaine’s backyard.”

“You’ve told me before.”

“I’m scared someone is going to screw up royally.”

“It won’t be me.”

“We need names, Gretta. Not just him confessing to being the instigator of the dirty club, but we need all the men’s names who pay to have someone killed or beaten or raped. We need names of all the people working in organizations throughout the US of A who are taking backhands to shred legal documents, overthrow charges, destroy evidence, turn a blind eye to crime.”

“I understand.”

“They’ll be ex pupils of KVU and members of the Snake and Chalice. Platinum members of the Snake and Chalice are at the top of the suspect list. I’m betting there’s hundreds of them going back decades.”

I listened intently, covering my free ear with my hand, so I could hear her over the sound of the TV in the living room.

“I want them all, Gretta. I want every last scumbag convicted and behind bars for good.”

“I know.”

“This is way too big to screw up and I feel like the pressure is too great for your shoulders.”

“You’re wrong. You’ve schooled me in this, Delaney. I’ve kept it a secret even from my closet friends and my mom. Not even Mathias knows half of what we get up to.”

“That’s for the benefit of the case, hence why she brought me in. There are moles even in the KVPD. If we mess this up, we could lose everything. Perps will go underground and we’ll never find them. That’s why I’m terrified.”

“I swear I won’t mess up.”

She sighed again. “Watch Ollie too.”

“Why?”

“I saw him hanging around Dom’s apartment building tonight. I think he followed you there.”

My heart sank. “Shit. I wasn’t expecting that.”

“You getting involved with him has made it complicated, especially since he seems to have feelings for you.”

“Should I break it off with him?”

She groaned as she thought about it. “It would make it cleaner.”

“But?”

“But he’s got his own uses.”

“True.”

Another pause. “I’m really sorry about your father.”

“He won’t tell me why he killed him.”

“I noticed that.”

“I need to know.”
