Chapter Four
Turning towards the bar, I order a round of drinks for us all. The whole time I can feel his eyes on me. The longer I’m facing the bar the angrier I get.
Are you following me?
How can I be following you when I was here first?
“Are you okay, Say?” Cass asks as she sees me shove my phone in my pocket.
“Yeah, just my asshole boss.”
“Don’t let him get to you. Block his calls for the weekend. You’re on your own time. You don’t owe him anything.”
“If only it was that easy,” I mutter under my breath.
Cass grabs my arm and drags me to a booth at the end of the dance floor.
I try to ignore Everett, this is my weekend away and I don’t want to talk about work with him. But every time we dance or laugh, his eyes are on me.
The more I have to drink, the more I move my body, the more brazen I get.
At one stage Cass is sat in the booth just staring into space, the rest of us are dancing and I feel someone come up behind me. When I feel hands on my waist I want to turn and give them a piece of my mind, but a part of me knows that it’s Everett. I always know when he walks into a room.
“Are you ignoring me, Saylor?” The heat from his hands is warming my core.
“Yes. I just want to enjoy my weekend and not have to think about you or work.”
“Do you usually think of me outside work, Saylor?” His breath wraps around my ear and sends goose bumps over my whole body.
I know I need to put a stop to his, but I’ve had fun tonight, not to mention the few drinks I’ve had. I turn to face him, which was a big mistake. His hands are still on my waist and I’m standing so close to him, I can feel his thighs resting on me.
“Come have a drink with me.” He nods his head back to his table in the corner.
“Why?” I whisper.
“Because I know you want to.” When he smiles at me, all my willpower leaves me. I’ve always been a sucker for his smile.
“I need to tell Cass where I am going. She’ll worry otherwise.” My heart is racing as I step away from him, stumbling slightly in my haste to get away from him. He catches me and keeps me upright, smirking at me as I walk over to the booth.
Cass’s eyes light up when I get closer. “Looks like someone is having a good night,” she says, as she eyes up Everett over my shoulder.
“I’m not so sure of that. Listen, I’m going to have a drink with him and then I’ll be back. Promise me you won’t leave without me.”
“Are you sure about that?” Cass smiles. “Do you know him?”
Oh God, I forgot that none of my friends have met Everett, they’ve only heard me moaning about him.
A hand shoots past me towards Cass. “I’m Everett Barrett.”
I jump slightly because I thought he had gone back to the corner, but I should have known better. “Fuck.” I whisper.
Cass’s eyes light up. “You’re Everett Barrett, as in Everett—Say’s boss, Everett?”
“Yeah, that Everett Barrett,” he chuckles and the tone just sends vibrations through me.
Cass looks at me and I plead her with my eyes not to say anything, particularly not any of the horrible things I’ve said about him. “I guess she forgot to tell us how hot you are.” And there it is. Clearly Cass can’t read eye language.
He laughs, “I’m going to steal her for a drink. We never get the opportunity to relax at work, so where better than Vegas, right?”
