Chapter Seven
“Mrs. Barrett, what are you doing here?” I sit up and push my hands through my hair.
“I’m trying to stop my son from making the biggest mistake of his life. You don’t belong in his life, Saylor. You never have and you never will.” She is standing at the foot of the bed pointing her finger at me.
“He loves me. He wants this baby. He told me so.”
She laughs, like Maleficent, loud and evil. “He told you so, did he? Well, let me tell you what he said to me last night. He told me that you are just a piece of ass to him.”
I gasp, my hand instinctively covering my mouth.
She continues, clearly in the zone right now. “He doesn’t know how to get rid of this little problem,” she waves her hands around in front of her at me, “without breaking you and giving you a chance to ruin his reputation.”
“I would never do that regardless of how he feels.” I get out of the bed and stand in front of her. “This is my baby and if he doesn’t want it then he can tell me himself. I’ve offered to do this on my own, but he won’t let me.”
“He doesn’t want you spreading rumors about him not looking after his responsibilities. I just told him that he needed to have a paternity test when the child is born.” She looks me up and down with disgust written all over her face. “God knows, it could be anyone’s.” She turns and leaves the room, moving downstairs.
I’m shaking, both in anger and in fear. What if what she says is true? Does Everett not want our baby? Will I be left on my own to bring him or her up? I don’t care. This baby will be loved whether it has a father and grandmother or not.
Determined, I make my way downstairs to find her in the lounge, leaning up against the fireplace.
She turns to face me. “Look, Saylor. You’re an intelligent woman. Everett is trying to do the right thing here. He wants to take care of his mistake, if it is his.”
I open my mouth to protest, but she just looks at me enough to cut me down.
“You’re not the right woman for him. All you are doing is holding him back. He’s been taking more time off recently and the business will suffer. He lives for his business. That is the only thing that he loves more than me. He doesn’t have room for anyone else in his life right now.”
I fall backwards, luckily the couch is behind me. Did he really say those things about me? He wouldn’t, would he? Is that why he didn’t talk to me when he got home last night and why he was gone this morning? Maybe he sent his mother here to save him from having to do it. It’s his easy way out.
“I love him and he loves me.” I have to try and keep him.
She laughs again, this time walking closer to me. I’m surprised when she kneels in front of me and takes my hands in hers.
“Saylor, he doesn’t love you. He just knew that you were easy and Everett can get lazy sometimes and is happy to do ‘easy’. But I can tell you here and now that he doesn’t love you and he doesn’t know how to tell you.”
“Why are you telling me this?” The tears are rolling down my face. I’m devastated. How could he not even tell me himself? What kind of coward gets his mother to tell me?
“Now, dear, I know you think I’m an evil witch, but I’m not.” She reaches into her bag and pulls out something that looks like a wallet. “I will arrange for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to be put in your bank account if you leave him today.” I gasp. Is she serious?
“If you give me your bank account details then I will transfer the money right now.” She looks at me with glee in her eyes. They are glistening. So are mine, but mine are full of tears.
“I don’t want your money, Mrs Barrett. I want a father for my child.”
She laughs. “Fine! A half a million.”
“Are you joking?” I can’t believe she increased her bribe to a half a million dollars.
“No, my dear. I want you out of Everett’s life. For good. I know that you want a father for your child, and with that amount of money you can get one. But you’re not having my son. Now, I want you gone today and the money will be in your bank by end of day.”
“You’re not listening to me. If your son can’t be man enough to tell me himself that he doesn’t love me and doesn’t want us to stay around, then he doesn’t deserve to see his baby.”
“Who says it is his baby? I’m giving you the opportunity to have a good life, Saylor. Take it.” She lets go of my hands and stands up, waltzing out of the lounge and slamming the front door behind her.
