Chapter Three

“What the fuck,Cass? Why are you hiding her in here and why didn’t I know she was in here?” He looks up and sees my face and every last bit of color leaves him. He dashes over to me and takes my hand, but I pull it away. I don’t want him to touch me.

Everett looks down at my hand. “Say? What is it? What happened? I was so worried when you didn’t come home. I tried to ring you and text you but you never answered.”

“How did you find me then?” My eyes are like slits and my pulse is speeding up, I can hear the heart monitor getting faster.

Cass looks at Everett. “She can’t get stressed. You need to leave.”

“Leave? That’s my woman and my baby. Why would I leave? Say, what’s going on?”

“I don’t want you here, Everett. I saw you at the office. This is your fault. You’re the reason I’m in here.”

“What are you talking about?” He grabs the closest chair and brings it to my bed. “I rang all the hospitals when I realized that there was something wrong. When I heard that you were here I dashed over straight away.”

“It took you nearly twenty four hours to find me, Everett. Twenty. Four. Hours.” I close my eyes and take a few deep breaths. “This is your fault.”

I hear his voice shake. “Is our baby okay? Are you okay?”

“Not that it’s any of your business, Everett,” Cass says with venom in her voice. “They’re both okay. The placenta erupted and dislodged from the womb. She has to be on complete bed rest to give the baby a chance of surviving.”

“I’ll sort it, Say. I’ll work from home so I can be there for you. We’ll make sure the baby is safe and that you rest.” He leans down and kisses me on the lips, but I move at the last minute so his lips land on my cheek. He must taste the tears that are silently rolling down my face, because he takes my face in his hands. “I love you, Say. I don’t know what happened or why you think it’s my fault, but I love you. I want you and our baby to stay safe.”

Everett looks over to Cass. “Can I talk to you outside, please?” Cass starts to shake her head but then sees the look in his eyes.

“Five minutes. That’s all I’m giving you.”

“That’s all it will take.” He walks to the door and then turns at the last minute. “I’ll be back in five minutes. But just so you know, I’m not leaving. And you’re coming home with me. Don’t think I’m letting you run away from me again.” He opens the door and then he disappears.

Cass comes over to me. “I’m going to tell him what you saw. He needs to know. He can’t keep pretending that he isn’t responsible.”

I don’t want this to be over. I don’t want to bring my baby up on my own, but if he’s with Zara now then I know that I need to let him be a part of the baby's life. I nod to Cass and watch as she steps into the corridor and closes the door behind her.

I can hear shouting but I can’t make any words out, it’s probably best that I don’t hear what he has to say. Maybe she can convince him that he needs to leave me alone. I don’t need this stress.

Suddenly, the door opens and a white-faced Everett steps through the door. He slams the door to stop Cass coming in and then he stalks over to me. “Did you think that I was cheating on you with Zara?”

I nod my head and tears fall once again. “Baby, I’d never do that. Why would I cheat on you when you’re the best thing to happen to me. Period. Her grandfather died and I was hugging her. She tried to kiss me but I pushed her away. You must have walked in at the wrong moment.”

I want to believe him. I really do. Maybe there’s some truth in there.

He takes my hands. “Saylor, I’d never cheat on you. You know my feelings on Zara too. I can’t believe I’m the reason you’re in here. This is all my fault. Why didn’t you stand up and say something? That’s what you’d normally do. Why did you just leave?

“I didn’t want to hear the truth, Everett. I’m fat. I cry all the time. I eat all the time and I know that I’m snappy. Why would you want to be with me when you can have her?”

He smiles. “Because I love you for all those reasons and more. I don’t mind you being snappy, it makes me laugh, most of the time. You’re not fat, you’re beautifully pregnant with a human being that we made out of our love. Why would I throw that all away? If I’d known you were here I would have been here straight away instead of tearing my hair out at home waiting for you to come back and tell me your phone died or something.”

“It did die. Because you were blowing it up with calls and messages.”

“That you didn’t answer. Baby, you’ve got to learn to trust me and if there’s something bothering you then tell me. Let me know so that I can fix it.”

The door opens and Cass comes in, looking sheepish. “Hey, is it a war zone in here?” I shake my head and she comes in. “Sorry, Everett. I really thought you’d cheated on her. I might have been a bit harsh out there.”

He smiles back at her. “Harsh? I don’t think I’d call it harsh, it was more like you annihilated me. You definitely have backbone, Cass.” He holds out his hand. “Truce?”

She smiles back. “Truce. But just so you know. Next time you break her heart I won’t let you within ten feet of her.”

“Deal, because I’m not going to break her heart. I’m going to keep her and our baby safe and cherish every moment with them.”
