Chapter Six

Things between Everettand I have gotten better in the past week. There is, however, an elephant in the room, he’s yet to tell his mom about us and the baby. I’ve thought about bringing it up, but things have been going so well, I just don’t want to get into an argument with him, but I’m going to have to. I need to know why he’s not telling anyone about me and the baby. Is he ashamed?

He’s gone into work this morning, he’s had an important meeting along with having a meeting with human resources. I had hoped that it was about him getting rid of Zara and hiring someone else but that was wishful thinking. He’s bringing in new procedures along with a new software. By the time I go back to work, I’ll have to learn everything new. I’m not looking forward to it but I’m hoping that if Zara’s still there, she’ll know what she’s doing.

“Hey, babe,” Cassie’s voice calls out as she walks into the sitting room. Her nose scrunches up. “Oh, what’s happened now?”

I frown. “Nothing, why?”

Her brows practically hit her hairline. “Your face says otherwise. What’s he done now?”

I laugh. “What makes you think it’s him?”

She sits down beside me. “It’s always him, or that mother of his.”

“I’m probably being stupid.”

She throws her cell onto the table. “How about you let me be the judge of that?”

I nod. “I’m upset that Everett still hasn’t told his mom about me or the baby yet.”

She gasps. “Say, are you serious?”

I nod. “Yeah, the last time we spoke about it, he got annoyed. I haven’t brought it up since because I don’t want to start an argument, but it’s getting to me.”

She looks at me with concern. “I’d be pissed if I were you. You need to ask him why he’s keeping you both a secret.”

“I’m scared of his answer.”

She crosses her arms over her chest. “Say, that woman is vile. Nothing that she says is true. In fact, you’re better than Everett is. Just because he’s rich doesn’t make him better than you and it certainly doesn’t make that witch better than you.”

“What if he listens to her? Takes her side and agrees that he should marry someone who is rich or in their circle? I can’t match them, Cass. She’s made it very clear she wants Everett with Zara.” I sigh, it hurts thinking about this, especially what happened the last time I saw that woman. “Zara’s gorgeous.”

Cass tuts. “That woman’s far from gorgeous, she may be on the outside but we both know that men want a little more than looks from their women. She’s useless.”

“I love you.” She always knows how to make me feel better.

She reaches for my hand and gives it a squeeze. “I love you too. You are amazing, gorgeous, and smart. You deserve the world, Say, it’s what your mom wanted for you; what I want for you. If Everett can’t give you that, maybe it’s better if you call it quits before the baby’s born.”

A lump forms in my throat. “You don’t know how many times I’ve thought the exact same thing. I don’t want my baby to be a dirty secret. I don’t want to be someone’s secret. I know I deserve better, we deserve better, but I love him, Cass.”

She nods. “I know you do, trust me, I get it. A wise woman once told me that you don’t need a man to validate you.” I smile at her, that’s what I’ve been telling her since she ended things with Paul, her cheating ex-fiancé. “Yes, being in love can be the best feeling in the world, but, Say, you need more than love to have a relationship. You can’t be the only one giving something.”

I don’t respond, she’s right. I really need to talk to Everett.

I hear the front door opening and both Cass and I turn.

“Good afternoon, ladies,” Everett says with a smile on his face, “Cass, had I known you were here, I’d have brought lunch for you too.”

Cass gets to her feet. “No worries, I’ll leave you two to talk.” She gives me a pointed look and I know that she’ll be calling me later to see if anything has been said.

Everett watches as Cass leaves. “Talk about what?” he asks, turning to face me.

I sigh. “Talk about why you’ve not told your mom about me or the baby.”

The smile is wiped from his face. “Christ, Say, not this again.”

I frown. “Not this again? Everett, you can’t be serious?”
