Chapter twenty-one

Leonid

Lina has been doing much better since the doctor prescribed her the medicine for the nausea. The home health nurse comes once a week and gives her an intravenous cocktail of fluids and a different medication. I thank God for this medicine every day when we do our prayers. She can walk around and function, rather than stay in bed. Lina is dancing around as she makes breakfast. I am watching her from the door, and all I can do is smile.

Today is a warehouse day so I need to get ready to go, but I cannot take my eyes off her.

“Tsvetok1, you are glowing. I love seeing you like this.” I walk over and pull her into my arms. I spin her around and hold her tight to me. “I feel good today. Fantastic really,” she exclaimed. She hands me a plate, and it has eggs, sausage, and potatoes. “You have work today, no? Eat up, I don’t need my muzh2 hungry when he starts his day.” Taking the plate to the table, I sit and eat while she serves her food.

Sitting across from me at the table, she asks, “So, do you know what you’ll be doing today?” I nod. “Just checking on your parents’ warehouse. Then I have to meet up with the twins. Should be a pretty simple day today.” After finishing my food, I put the plate in the sink and rinse it. Lina has given Alina time off in the mornings, so she can make my breakfast. She has been falling into her role as a nurturer very well. Our child is going to have the best mother.

“What do you have planned today, Tsvetok3?” I ask as I lean down and kiss the top of her head. She shrugs. “I figured I would read a little, then make a list of all the things we will need for the baby. Maybe even start assessing the room that will be the nursery.” That makes me smile, the thought that in only thirty weeks, there will be a little ‘us’ here. “That sounds like a plan. You just tell me what you’ll need from me. You could probably call Mila and ask her, too.”

I check my watch and realize I need to get moving. Fuck, I never imagined that I would turn into such a romantic. But the urge to stay home and nest with her is so strong today. I would much rather stay here and put together a nursery and baby furniture than go deal with her father. “Okay, I have to get going now.” planting a kiss on her lips. I run out of the room, throw on some clothes, and head out. Already knowing I will be a little later, I shoot a text to the twins, letting them know I am on my way.

Ilya responds first, then Oleg.

Ilya: Bring food

Oleg: Bring coffee, too. The stuff they have here is shit.

I can almost hear those two laughing. They have always treated me just like everyone else, and not the heir to the bratva. The drive to the warehouse goes by slowly, as I get caught in mild traffic. My phone rings. It's Oleg.

“I am nearly there, and no, I didn’t get food or coffee,” I tell him.

“That’s not why I’m calling. Brat, your father-in-law, is causing serious problems. There is money missing from the last drop that Sasha can’t account for. He is causing a huge scene. Threatening to call the police and shit.”

Fuck this motherfucker!

“Okay, I'll be there in…” checking the time, “5 minutes. Tie him up, and have him ready to go.” This ends today. I hope Lina can forgive me, but her father has to go. I cannot have this Ublyudok4 calling the police. Even though we've paid off a lot of cops, we still haven't reached all of them. I put my foot down on the accelerator and weave through the remaining traffic. When I pull up to the warehouse, Oleg has Nikolai hogtied on the ground and a bag over his head.

“Nice touch,” I say, getting out of the car.

He smirks. “Ilya is just letting Sasha know we are leaving. Do you need to go in? Or can we just throw this suka5 in the trunk?” Nikolai curses, and Oleg kicks him in the ribs.
