When he sits upright in the seat, I rise again and snuggle against his chest. Our bodies are still covered in sweat, and our hearts are beating hard under our ribs. We simply enjoy the pleasant silence and catch our breath.

At some point, I look up at him with a genuine smile because I am completely happy at this moment. All the worries and problems of my everyday life are forgotten here and now because it’s just him and me. Ezra makes me happy.

“Yes… I’m falling in love with you right now, Ezra King,” I whisper into the silence and give him a gentle kiss on his chin.

His gaze drops, and he grins ear to ear before pulling me back to his lips, placing a hand on my cheek.

“And I’m in love with you,” he breathes against my lips and kisses me again with a passion that says more than words alone.

Hearing him say it stirs something deep within me, even though I know we’ve already set the catastrophe in motion. Still, I don’t want to think about the fallout right now—not in this beautiful moment.

After he detaches himself from me again, he looks deep into my eyes and I can see how happy he is. But suddenly, without me understanding why, something shifts in his expression. It darkens within seconds, and he looks angrier than I’ve ever seen him.

“What is this?” he snarls, gripping my chin with two fingers to turn my face.

My heart skips a beat. Damn! My makeup must have failed during our sweaty fun, and Ezra has just discovered the dark spots on my face. I quickly pull away from his grasp and lower my eyes. I don’t know what to say to him, and I don’t want to discuss it.

“Nothing,” I mumble, hoping he’ll let it go.

“Nothing?! Did he hit you again? In the face?” Ezra asks angrily, his whole body tensing up next to me.

I don’t want to argue with him, especially not about my husband and not now. We only have a few hours…

“Ezra, please,” I try to calm him down.

“No, Beauty! Your husband is beating you! How can you stay with him? How can you…?” He stops suddenly, so I gently lift my head to look at him. “It’s not the first time he’s hit you in the face? He… has been beating you up so badly for years, am I right?” He puts one and one together on his own.

“I’ll kill him!” he hisses hatefully.

I flinch and can’t help the tears that well up and obscure my vision. So I lower my head again and try to stifle the rising sobs. I want to be brave. I want to stop the violent trembling and not burst into tears in front of my lover. But all of this… it’s too much for me, and I can no longer hold back the sobs and trembling. Then there’s Ezra’s anger and his hateful look.

“Hey, Beauty…” he murmurs softly and gently, the way he always talks to me, and puts an arm around me to pull me back against his chest.

His voice is no longer angry; it is filled with love and concern. His warmth envelops me, and the trembling diminishes. I let his fingers, carefully placed under my chin, guide me to look at him.

“I’m sorry.”

I shake my head and plant a gentle kiss on him. He has nothing to apologize for because he’s perfect, and I show him that with this kiss. I cup his angular face and kiss him more intensely so that he understands how much he means to me. He also wraps his arms around me again. But even though he has apologized and calmed down to me, I can still feel his whole body tense and shaking with anger. And yet, he pulls himself together for me and doesn’t let his emotions run wild. And with this, he’s done it. Ezra King, my heart belongs to you.

The ringing of my cell phone interrupts our intense kiss, but I ignore it and pull him back to my lips. Ezra paused the kiss so I could answer it, but I don't want to talk on the phone or do anything else right now except be in his arms. Desperately, my tongue finds its way back into his mouth, but the phone rings again, breaking the moment once more.

I smile apologetically at him as I pick up my purse from the floor and fish out my cell phone to take the call. However, when I read Kelly’s name on the display, I stumble briefly before picking up the phone.

“Kelly?” I ask irritably and give Ezra a puzzled look.

His brow furrows, and he looks at me questioningly.

“Cora, I don’t know how you’re going to do this, but you need to get your sweet ass to me right now, wherever you are, because your husband is here asking questions he definitely shouldn’t be asking,” Kelly whispers excitedly into the earpiece.

“He… what? Thomas is with you?” my voice is shrill in panic, and I immediately straighten up. “What did he say? What does he want?” I bombard her with questions as I clasp my cell phone between my shoulder and ear and awkwardly put my panties back on in the back seat. I have to go!

“Yes. He came and wanted to know where you were. He didn’t believe you were with me and said something was wrong. I said that I’d run out of wine because we wanted to spend the evening at my place spontaneously because of the children, and you went to get some. Cora darling, if you don’t want to be found out, make sure you get here as quickly as possible and don’t forget the wine!” Kelly continues to whisper to me so that Thomas doesn’t overhear our conversation.

“Shit! All right. I’ll be there as soon as I can. Stall him, Kelly. Please,” I beg my best friend in a panic.

“I’ll do anything, sweetie. Hurry!”

With that, we hang up.
