“I tried to stop her, but short of physical violence, it wasn’t happening,” Judy said, shaking her head in the doorway.

“It’s okay, Judy,” Xander said.

The beautiful woman’s gaze cut right across Cynder, moving faster than it seemed possible over her sensible shoes, hand-me-down suit and hair pulled up into a messy bun. “Who’s this?” she asked.

Cynder couldn’t find words to respond and looked to Xander. He didn’t seem to hold any warmth for the woman, but his eyes moved over Cynder no less dismissively.

“No one,” he said.

Fighting back tears that were as angry as they were hurt, Cynder excused herself from Xander’s office without a look back, hoping to make it to the bathroom before any tears fell.
