Chapter 22

Nine Months Later

Olivia was right. We had a boy. Two months ago, our son, named after my grandfather, Vincent Andrew Wilton, came screaming into the world. He is perfect and has my blue eyes but his mother’s thick black hair. He is a joy, sleeping through the night at just six weeks old.

Not too long after in mid-May, we are married on the beach at the cabin in a private ceremony with close friends and family. Olivia wore a simple white dress, but as far as I was concerned, she could have worn a burlap sack. The woman could make anything look beautiful. Her brother gave her away, and we recited vows that we wrote ourselves.

For now, Olivia is taking a leave of absence from Eltech. I had to break the news to my father months ago that I would not be coming to Boston, maybe ever again. I need to be where my family is. He was satisfied as long as I could contribute to the company by telecommuting.

Zane was not so easy to convince. He begs me to come into the office after cost overruns on a couple of projects bit into Eltech’s profits. But I tell him I need to make my schedule and would come into the office when time allowed. To my benefit, I do own twenty percent of the company, which I plan to turn over to my son and any other children we have.

I lean against the door jamb, watching Olivia feed and softly sing to our son. I’m so happy I can’t contain myself. I have everything I want when only months ago, I thought I lost it all.

A few days ago, I came home from work to find that Olivia had framed several pictures of our time together. She placed them on the desk in my office, and I take the time to look over each one. The last picture, which sat in a small silver frame, was of Cassie. Only someone with as pure a heart as Olivia would share our lives with my first wife.

As much as I appreciate the gesture, I take the picture and put it in my top desk drawer. I loved Cassie, and she would always hold a piece of my heart, but the rest belongs to Olivia.
