Page 117 of That Last Secret

I want to keep this up after graduation.

“I guess I’m just nervous after hearing about his history with women,” Macey continues. “I’m not as experienced as he is soI’m unsure how to process all of it. What if he gets bored with me? What if he ends up changing his mind in a month? I don’t know how the male mind works.”

“I’d never lie to you about things like this,” I tell her honestly. “Oliver was kind of a playboy for a long time. He’s always lived carefree and like every day is his last. But he hasn’t talked to my brothers about that stuff since his birthday trip last year.”

“How would you know what he talks to his brothers about?” Avery raises a brow in my direction. “Marc says he doesn’t talk to you about those things.”

Shit. Avery is about to call me out.

“I mean… I’m just assuming.”

“Are you assuming? Or is Logan telling you about the conversations they have at the bar when they go out Wednesday nights?” Avery says with an accusing tone.

I feel my cheeks turn crimson red with how she’s calling me out like this. I feel guilty, like I’m hiding something, but Logan and I have never talked about his nights out with my brothers.

I’m being honest in saying I’m assuming.

So why do I feel guilty?

“I fully plan to circle back to this new revelation after you continue with what you were saying about Oliver to Macey,” Avery says. “Because I’m sick and tired of you two hiding whatever relationship you are having behind our backs.”

“There’s—” I start, but pause quickly as my lips close with a tight seal.

Would it be so bad if I told them?

Avery won’t say anything and I doubt Macey will either.

I should really get this off my chest.

“Fine,” I concede. “I’ll tell you guys everything after, but if I find out it got back to my brothers, you’re all fucking dead.”

“Fine, continue,” Avery encourages her.

I look back to Macey to continue even though the nerves in my stomach are at an all-time high. “Like I was saying, Oliver changed his ways after his birthday trip. He hasn’t been with anyone since he met you. I’m not just talking about when he saw you again at the bar you worked at. I’m talking about that first flight you two took from Montana to New York.”

My hands fall to my thighs and my breathing picks up.

I try to focus on the conversation in front of us, but I’m also terrified that Avery will ‘circle back’ to this.

“I think I’m really falling in love with him.” Macey sighs.

“Oh, babe.” Avery chuckles.

“You fell a long time ago,” I finish for her.

Avery continues laughing while Macey sits there smiling. I know the look on my face is one Avery can read.

“You did too, Emiline.” Avery winks.

“Huh?”

“I told you I was going to circle back. We solved Macey’s problem, and now it’s your turn.”

“I don’t have a problem,” I say.

“Tell us about Logan,” Avery urges.

I look from her to Macey and back at her.
