“How about this,” Brooke starts. “Why don’t I reschedule mine for the same day and time as you if a spot is available? This way, you don’t have to go alone. And we can come back here as soon as it’s done.”
“You’d move your date up by two weeks, and take it in a few days, for me?”
She nods. “I’d do anything for you. That’s what best friends are for.”
I’ll never know how I got so lucky to have Brooke as my best friend, but I will never take it for granted.
“Okay. Let’s do this,” I tell her before looking over at Logan.
He’s turned into my biggest supporter. My crutch when I needed someone to hold me up. My anchor keeping me grounded in the darkest of waters.
I’m going to be strong. For you, Logan.
There’s beenno change in Logan’s condition over the last forty-eight hours.
It's a mix of fear, guilt, and uncertainty that grips me as I prepare to leave Logan for my boards today. The thought that he might take a turn for the worse while I'm away is a constant, nagging worry.
I rise from my chair in the corner of his room, the same spot I've occupied for countless hours, and approach his bed. “Come back to us,” I whisper, my voice barely audible, just before the door creaks open and my three brothers enter.
“How’s he doing?” Oliver asks first.
“No change.”
He nods, and Thomas and Oliver make their way to his bed.
“You got this, Logan,” Thomas tells him, barely above a whisper.
I feel myself getting emotional with his tone, but Marc coming to my side, grabs my attention. “Are you almost ready to go?” he asks.
“I’m going to leave here in about five minutes.”
“I’m actually going to take you,” Marc says. “I talked to Brooke already, and she’s meeting us downstairs.”
I offer him a weak smile. It’s hard to even force myself to do that today. Now that I think about it, I can’t remember the last time I did.
“You don’t have to do that.”
“Yes, I do. I’m going to drop you two off, and I’ll be waiting around the corner at the little coffee shop whenever you’re done. I have to do some work, anyway.”
“Will you have your phone on you? In case the hospital calls?” I ask.
Marc holds it up. “It’s fully charged, and I even brought my wall charger with me. This way, I’m available when you call me or when Thomas does if there is any change.”
I nod.
I look down at Logan laying in the bed the way I always do.
He still looks so different to me, yet exactly the same.
“I’ll be right back,” I tell Logan before kissing his forehead.
Just as I’m about to walk out the door, Thomas stops me.
“Emiline,” he says, and I turn to face him. “You got this, okay? You’re going to do amazing. When you come out on the other end, you will officially be a Registered Nurse, and I couldn’t be prouder of you.”
Thomas walks over, wrapping his arms around me, and I melt into him.
He knows that’s exactly what I needed to hear to calm my beating heart.
