I’d heard of Tommy. He’d once been a mob enforcer but was now a lieutenant. This wasn’t a good situation.
“Let me help you,” I insisted.
She grimaced. “Unless that car of yours is worth a quarter of a billion dollars and you feel like selling it, I don’t see how you can help.”
Yeah, I was well off, but notthatwell off. Grey was the one worth billions. Maybe, if I sold everything I owned, I might be able to pull together a quarter of a billion dollars.
Ana nodded at my silence. “Yeah, I thought so, now stay back.” She returned to the door and opened it. I stayed out of sight as she finished talking to the two guys.
“Hey, sorry about that, ignore that guy. He’s my second cousin once removed on my birth mother’s side. He’s got more muscle than brains, and he’s not sticking around. Don’t worry. I’ll have your money in five days, I promise.”
“You’d better, lady,” the one said then their footsteps clomped away.
Ana closed the door and leaned on it heavily. “Fuck me,” she whispered.
“Your uncle can’t remember where the money is?” I asked, an idea forming in my head.
“He can’t remember where his bathroom is half the time. He keeps wandering into mine.”
I didn’t need to know that. But still— “What if I knew someone who could help him remember, someone who’s good at reaching into foggy minds and finding the truth?”
Ana’s eyes widened. “Who?”
“We daemons have a wide variety of powers. I know a woman. Her name is Freyja. She’s actually Fen’s grandmother… sort of. She’s a seeress and has a way of looking into people’s minds. She might be able to pull out the information you need.”
“Really?” Ana was clearly interested now. “Fuck yeah! When can we set that up? You heard those guys. I have five days!”
“Perhaps tomorrow or the day after. I’ll give her a call.”
“That would be amazing!” Ana said and took a step forward as if she was going to hug me.
My cock surged with hope, but then she stopped herself, seemingly remembering who I was. Still, she smiled up at me and there was definitely something in that smile that hadn’t been there before.
“If you do this for me, if you can figure this out… then maybe I’ll have a surprise for you, on our date.”
By all the gods of the Nile!
“I’ll set it up right away!” I smiled at her and headed for the door.
This time, as I open the door, I interrupted a deliveryman. He saw me, eyes going wide, then tripped over the top step and fell, throwing the box he’d been carrying.
It flew into the air and I tried to catch it, but my chaos chose that moment to rear its ugly head. One of my hands got to the box before the other and with my superhuman strength, I succeeded in batting it into Ana’s front room and punching a hole in the side of the box. It landed hard and burst open spilling dozens of dildos and vibrators.
“Fuck me,” Ana groaned behind me.
“It looks like you had plans to do just that.” The words flew out of my mouth before I could stop them.
Her face turned bright red, the blush racing down her neck and disappearing beneath her T-shirt and her expression went from pure embarrassment to shock to fury.
“That’s none of your business.”
Crap. In an instant, I’d lost all the brownie points I’d just earned.
She grabbed the door and pointed to the street. “Out. Now!”
For a second my stupid mind wanted to say something, tell her it was nothing to be embarrassed about, even if I could do a much better job at satisfying her than those toys.
Then I regained my sanity, clamped my mouth shut, and left.
