“Hey, let’s just try to make the best of it,” I cup my arm on his shoulder, and flash him a lop-sided smile—it’s the best I can manage right now.

Once we settle into the cruiser, I pull out on the road and begin rolling down the asphalt, assessing traffic and drivers around us.

“How’s Grayson?” I ask Luke about his son as he stares out of the passenger window.

“Growing like a weed. He’s obsessed with this book about the human body that my mom bought for him. He pretty much has the whole thing memorized,” the corner of his mouth tips up in amusement.

“How old is he now?”

“He’ll be four next month. The kid is already reading, Cooper. I’m in serious trouble. He might end up being one of those prodigy kids that has a college degree by the time he’s thirteen at this rate.”

I chuckle as a Mustang I recognize pulls right out in front of us, screeching the tires and making me brake hard to avoid impact.

“What the hell?” I yell, instantly pissed off since the anger I felt this morning was only reduced to a simmer after the gym, not extinguished completely.

“You gonna pull that car over, Walsh? That was a dangerous move…” Luke says as I flip on the lights and sirens before he can finish.

Following closely behind, the Mustang coasts to a stop and pulls over on the side of the road as I shift the cruiser into park and wait for a few minutes.

“Need me?” Luke asks and I nod my head. I know the driver and you never can sense what to expect when it comes to her.

We exit the car and approach on each side, my hand covering my gun on instinct. But as soon as I see her face, the uncertainty of what I would find when I see Penny was completely warranted.

“Morning, Deputy,” she winks at me while smacking on a piece of gum.

“Morning, Penny,” I state before she turns to the passenger side and acknowledges Luke’s presence. She licks her lips, playing with her lip ring, before turning her attention back to me.

“I’m so glad you caught me, Cooper. I have something for you.” Penny’s self-assured tone makes me curious as hell what this woman could possibly have for me.

I shake my head. “Penny, do you know why I pulled you over?”

“Yup. I cut you off without using my signal and almost caused an accident,” she nods and keeps rummaging through her back seat.

Luke widens his eyes at me, silently asking me if this woman is serious. I bob my head up and down in confirmation.

“Ah! Here it is!” She exclaims, holding up the biggest purple dildo I’ve ever seen.

“That’s for me?” I choke on my own spit as Luke bursts into laughter across from me on the other side of the car.

“Oh, no wait… that’s for Clara,” she shakes her head and then tosses it back on the cushion.

“The fuck? What does Clara need with that?” I’m instantly furious with the thought of Clara using that to pleasure herself. First off, it’s ungodly large. And second, the only dick she should be interested in is mine.

“Well, since you won’t be giving her your dick anytime soon, she’s gonna need something to keep her happy,” she shrugs before twisting back to face me with a Tupperware container in hand.

“Uh, I think I’m gonna go wait in the car,” Luke gestures over his shoulder with his thumb and then mouths, “Good luck” to me before walking away.

“Penny,” I kneel next to her window so we’re at the same level now. Normally, I would never do that on a routine traffic stop, but I know Penny doesn’t mean actual harm to anyone, even though her maneuver she pulled to get me to stop her was dangerous. “What is this about?”

“I told you, I have a delivery for you. Here,” she says as she hands me the container that is still piping hot with a note attached to the top.

“What is this?” I ask, holding the carton up above my head to see the bottom.

“Lasagna.”

“Where did you get this?” I peel back one corner of the lid and inhale the smell of tomatoes, garlic, and melted cheese. Fuck, that smells good.

“Clara made it this morning. Insisted I get it to you for lunch. I thought about just swinging by the station, but when I did, they told me you weren’t there and out on patrol today. So, I’ve been following around every cruiser I could find until I finally spotted you.”
