They were doing their best to keep me distracted, which I truly appreciated. We made plans to go dress shopping next weekend because this weekend, Grey was returning, and I couldn’t wait. I already knew the entire weekend would be filled with fucking and movies.

God, was it Saturday morning yet?

“Alright guys, class is starting soon,” Jeremy announced.

Ash glanced back at him before turning to me and raising a brow. They had become friends, which I was absolutely excited about, but I still couldn’t bring myself to even attempt to speak to him. “Why haven’t you talked to him yet? It’s getting weird.”

I shrugged, glancing to Grey’s friend. I was nervous. Grey said this was his best friend. I wanted to make a good impression, but, I suppose, nottalking to him was probably doing the exact opposite of that. “Go, I’ll see you at lunch.”

My phone dinged as they said their goodbyes.

Grey:Hey, Snowflake, I hope your day is filled with

poems and haikus of rose-colored

stars. Five more days.

I melted at his words.

Emily:My once untethered soul has been attached

to yours since the moment you first said my name.

No poem or haiku could explain how much

I miss you, how much I care about you.

If he were here, I might have tried to persuade him to call in sick. I would have skipped class, I would have convinced him to stay at the loft with me.

We would have spent the day watching movies, and kissing each other, just being in the presence of the other.

Fuck, I couldn’t wait until he came home.

“Emily?”

My eyes shifted to the open door, finding Diamond’s secretary waiting for me. “Come with me please.”

My brows furrowed, and I couldn’t help but look towards Jeremy whose demeanor had shifted. His eyes had hardened, question in his eyes.

“Why?” I asked without moving.

Grey had told me everything that had happened with Eris and Diamond. Since Malachi’s threats, they had been idle. Not a single movement, no threats, the drugs had been filtered mostly out of the school, and whatever drugs were here now were brought in by other dealers connected to the students.

They had finally shifted into the background where they belonged. Even so, my apprehension didn’t ease.

Her eyes softened. She glanced towards Jeremy and back, inhaling deeply. “There’s been an accident. It’s your father. Janice sent a car to take you to the hospital.”

My heart stuttered, every other thought dropping instantly. No. No, this couldn’t be happening.

I grabbed my things and ran for the door. “Is he okay?” I asked as she led me down the hall. “What happened?”

“I’m sorry, sweetie. They ran a redlight, Helen is okay, but your dad is in surgery.”

My heart was racing, sweat trickling down my spine. No. No, this couldn’t be happening. It was four days until the anniversary of the car accident that took mom and Charlie, I couldn’t lose dad too. I couldn’t lose him too. “He’s going to be okay, isn’t he?” Iasked, searching for reassurance in her soft blue eyes. “Is he going to be okay?”

She squeezed my arm, taking me to the front of the school where my dad’s town car awaited me. “I’m sure he will be.”
