I giggled, shook my head, and tried to stop him from pulling me to my feet, but he was stronger. “We shouldn’t be seen dancing or doing anything together,” I said in a hushed tone as he grabbed my hand, linked our fingers and began showing me his moves.

“Why not?” he asked with a teasing smile. “Come on it's salsa, what can it hurt?”

It couldn’t hurt anybody, but it could give us away. Iris was happy in Francis’s arms, and she was laughing so loud, I could hear her giggles from where I stood with Josh. There were other people dancing, and Josh was probably right.

Who could it hurt?

“No one would notice us anyway,” he added before he made me do a spoon. “Come on… Loosen up and let’s have fun. No one is watching, and even if they are… I don’t care.”

“Tempting.” I wanted nothing more than to let go and enjoy the moment with Josh, but I couldn’t risk being careless or letting Iris find out about our tryst. He didn’t relent, so I finally got up and joined him on the dance floor for a bit.

“See? No one cares if we dance. Everyone’s too busy having their own fun.”

Maybe not, but no one would approve of us being together, especially Iris or my dad.I wasn’t ready for all the talk I knew would come with it, and besides, what if I am just a fling for Josh, someone to have fun with for a while?

He had more experience, and he was used to living free with no commitments. I had my expectations and beliefs… Josh clearly no longer believed in such, and he had made that clear the last time I talked about love.

The song continued playing, and I let him pull me to the dance floor for another round. I wasn’t into the dance at first, and I was still contemplating it when the song changed into Camilla Cabello’s ‘Don’t go yet’ I let myself forget about anyone in the room who wasn’t Josh.

Another twirl and I was in Josh's arms. His hands wrapped around my waist, and we continued dancing, but feeling his body rock against mine was stirring my arousal and making me feel the urge to turn around, wrap my arms around his neck and bring his lips down to mine.

His hands on my waist tightened. I felt his hot breath when he dropped his lips to my neck and pressed a kiss there. I nearly jumped out of my skin with pleasure and shock.

“Josh,… someone will see,” I whispered, my throat tightening and my chest swelling too much in my chest. A low hum left his lips, and it made me burn further for his touch.

I had to pull out his arms and put some distance between us. “Iris is coming our way,” Josh said just then, and I plastered my hands to my cheeks then spun around quickly and faked a smile.

“Hey, wanna dance?” Iris asked as soon as she got to me.

“Sure, let’s go,” I answered breathlessly, then she stole me away from her dad and I continued moving with her on the dance floor, grateful that she hadn’t noticed anything between Josh and I.

BREE

Summer had its way of making everything shiny and glittery, but I was always so eager these days. Spending my time at Rue’s bakery had its perks. I got to learn more of Allison’s recipes and also meet most of the charming locals.

Josh was the one person I looked forward to seeing the most and he always dropped by. “It seems you’re getting addicted to this cake,” I said to him after he ordered some cupcakes with sprinkles. “You get them every day.”

“I’m addicted to you,” Josh replied, and he beamed when I looked around to make sure no one had come out of the kitchen. “It has nothing to do with how good these cupcakes are.” He lowered his voice as he spoke and leaned forward toward me on the counter.

“Since Iris has been home, I’ve been trying to get over you, but I can’t. I don’t want to want you, I know I shouldn’t. You’ve made yourself a staple in my life and I don’t want you out of it.”

“Well we have to stop,” I managed to say.

When he drew too close, I stopped him by raising a hand. “Someone will see,” I gasped. “We need to find a way to stop. We must…”

“Have dinner with me tonight. Iris is gone for the rest of the week, she made this amazing pasta sauce, and I’m sure I can whip up something nice with it. Or we can order in, and do something else while waiting for our order to arrive. It can be pizza or anything you want, even Thai.”

A slow smile built on his lips when he finished talking and his eyes drifted down my face to my body before he looked at me again. “What do you say?”

I became strongly aware of my own heartbeat as I handed him the packaged cupcakes and blew out air from my lips. “Tonight it is,” I said just before two kitchen staff walked out with trays of more cupcakes and freshly baked bread.

Josh retreated from the counter, but he winked at me before he turned and walked out of the bakery. I was still dealing with the flush on my cheeks when my phone started buzzing in the pocket of my shorts.

I checked to see it was my dad calling, then I plastered the phone to my ear and cleared my throat.

“Hey, dad.”
