She didn’t say anything else, but I could practically see the wheels in her head spinning as she sat there and twitched her fingers around each other.

“Just breathe,” I said and covered her hands with mine, so she didn’t have to twitch her fingers anymore. “Relax.”

“I can’t … I’m nervous,” she answered then met my gaze. “You obviously don’t want a baby, your daughter is 25 years old. I don’t want this to seem like I did this on purpose. If you don’t want this then I can…”

“Do you want a baby?” I asked her, cutting short the rest of her ramble so she quieted down and looked at me again.

My question made her pause. Her eyes darted from mine to the ground, then she looked at me again. “If you want a baby, then you shouldn’t be so worried, Bree. You’re having my baby and trust me I’m excited about it. Children are sweet and kind… I have Iris and I don’t mind having another.”

“You don’t?” she queried and frowned as she met my gaze fully.

“I don’t. Besides, this is on both of us. We should have been more careful. I should have been more careful, and I wasn’t.” I told her before I tightened my grip on her hands, then scooted closer to her and raised her hands to my lips. “It’s my fault, and I’m sorry that it had to happen this way. If you don’t want to have the baby, then you can make the decision to…”

“I don’t want to do that,” she cut in as she shook her head. Her pupils dilated for a bit, and she licked her lips again. “That’s not what I want to do. I just feared that you wouldn’t be too happy about the news considering that we haven’t really talked about…” she slowed, then added the last word in a tiny voice. “Us.”

“I’m not smiling or screaming in ecstasy yet because it depends on what you want to do. But if you want to keep the baby, then I’m all in, Bree. I’d never let you do it on your own.”

A ghost smile broke out on her lips before it disappeared again, and she launched back into her worrisome thoughts. “I …” she locked her lips and didn’t say anything for a whole minute before she said. “What about Iris? She’s not going to take this well, and my dad. … He’s going to be furious at me … At you too, and …”

“I’m a grown man, Bree, I intend to take responsibility for my actions. Your dad doesn’t scare me.”

“But …”

“Iris is my daughter, and she’ll be pissed yes, but she doesn’t scare me either. It’s just you and me, and ….”

I stopped because I didn’t want to make her panic again. I understood Bree was young, and if she still wanted to change her mind, then she had to know that the choice was solely hers, and I would support whatever she wanted to do.

“But you want a child?” she questioned again as if trying to double-check in a shaky voice as she fixed those mesmerizing blue eyes on mine. “You’re not angry? Or … Or worried?”

I shook my head, then chuckled for a bit. “Why would I be angry?”

“It’s just … It’s unexpected, and I didn’t want it to seem like I was springing this on you, so…”

I moved quickly and silenced her with a kiss. Bree had to understand that I had made the decision to take her that first night when she was trapped here, and the other times after that.

I didn’t regret it one bit, and I hoped that she didn’t too.

She kissed me back, then she pulled back slowly and broke into a smile. “I guess we’re having a baby,” she whispered before the grin widened on her lips and reached the corners of her eyes.

“We’re having a baby,” I repeated after taking a moment to stroke her cheeks, then kiss her on the lips again.

This time I splayed kisses over her nose, and cheeks, then kissed her forehead before pulling back and staring deep into her eyes.

“You don’t have to worry about anything. I’ll have to speak to your father, and then I’ll have to tell Iris…”

“No, not Iris,” she interrupted and shook her head. “I want to tell her myself.”

I knew my daughter well, and I understood that she had a possessiveness towards whatever she felt was hers, but how much would it hurt their relationship if she found out that Bree and I were not only a thing, but having a baby?

“I think it’ll be better if she hears it from me,” Bree continued. “And the last thing I want is to cause a rift between you two.”

Her eyes were soft on mine, and the urge to bring her closer to me for a hug crept up on me again, so I pulled her to her feet, then wrapped my hands around her waist and held her close.

I let my lids flutter close, then I inhaled her scent deeply and rested a hand on her small back. Bree’s softness cushioned me and sent warmth through my entire body.

We stayed locked in that embrace for a while before she stepped back and flattened her hands on my chest.

“Do you mind if we have that meal now?” I asked her in a light tone because I had missed spending time with her listening to the sound of her laugh. I could tell another laugh was bubbling from inside her the second her lips parted wide, and the tiny dimple in her left cheek showed.
