“Besides, it’s not like we’re moving in together or anything. It’s not going to make much of a difference if we tell them. I just… Let me find a way to tell Iris first. Let’s wait till after the wedding.
When she faced me again, my resistance melted and I closed the distance between us, put my hands around her waist and rested my forehead on hers.
“It’s hard staying away from you when all I want to do is touch you all the time,” I told her.
Bree put her hands on my cheeks, and we stared longingly into each other’s eyes before I leaned down for a kiss. Our lips met, and she kissed me back with passion.
Our bodies slowly pressed together while I cupped her chin with my right hand. I forgot all about Iris being close by and so did she obviously because she came willingly when I pulled her close and parted her lips for mine.
The heady feeling of desire that swarmed through me stole my breath and every sense of reasoning, but I was jarred back to reality when Iris’s shocked tone cut through my desire-fogged brain.
“Dad? Bree?”
We turned sharply towards the kitchen’s back entrance and saw Iris standing on the porch, her eyes wide, and lips parted in confusion.
“Iris,” Bree began but Iris was already storming back into the house with full strides. I was about to move too, but Bree stopped me with a hand on my arm. “Let me handle this.”
I nodded softly and sighed before she hurried into the house after Iris.
“Iris, please listen to me,” I heard Bree say as I followed after her.
“What’s there to explain about kissing my father in my house?” Iris yelled back as she got into the living room and paused in her strides. “He’s my father Bree, how could you do that? How long has this been happening?”
“Iris, I’m sorry I didn’t mean for it to happen.”
Iris was red in the cheeks and her ears too stayed the same shade. I hated to see her pissed like this, and we rarely ever got into an argument, so I knew this would hurt her for a long time.
“When did it first happen?” Iris retorted, her lips lifting in disgust as she slanted Bree a heated look. “Wait, does this mean that the baby … Is my dad the father?” She shrieked as she stared wildly at Bree. “Oh my God, this isn’t happening.”
The flash of hurt in my daughter’s eyes caused my chest to ache. Iris shook her head as she stared at me with tears brimming in my eyes, then looked at Bree again. “You’re my best friend, Bree, and he’s … He’s my dad,” she continued, her face rolled with disgust.
“I’m sorry, Iris. I didn’t plan this, neither of us did, and …”
“You’re screwing my dad and all you can say is that you didn’t plan this? Is this what you do when I’m not around? Is that why you come here? Pretend to be my friend while you’re screwing him in secret?’
“Iris” I cautioned in a thick tensed voice, sensing that things were about to spiral out of hand. “I won’t let you speak to her that way.”
Bree turned to me, but her gaze stayed on mine only for a second and it was more of a pleading stare than anything else.
“Dad!” Iris yelled as the tears slid down her cheeks. “She’s my friend. You could have had anyone, but you choose Bree instead? How could you do that to me?”
“Iris, listen…” I tried to speak again, but she only shook her head.
Bree hung her head, unable to look Iris in the eye and I walked towards them both. “Bree you should head home,” I said, interrupting whatever Iris had to say next. “I’ll call you.”
“Iris,” Bree tried to move towards Iris, but Iris backed away from her.
“Dad is right, you should leave and don’t come back here… Don’t even show up for the wedding.”
Bree gasped. “Iris, you don’t mean that.”
“Like hell I don’t. I mean every word. I don’t want to see you here ever again.”
It took Bree a moment, but she finally walked out of the house, and once the door closed, I faced Iris. “She’s your best friend. I watched you two grow, and …”
“You should have thought of that dad, before screwing her,” Iris spat then ran past me up the stairs. I heard the slam of her door and stood in the living room for a long time before walking to the kitchen to grab my phone.
I tried to call Bree, but her line rang straight to voicemail three times, and she didn’t return any of my calls even after so much time passed.
