“I want more ice cream,” Samuel requested, then I got up with him, and took him to the counter to get more ice cream. We returned home that afternoon to see Allison in the kitchen.
“You’re not going to the bakery today?” I asked and she shook her head.
“No,” she answered. “I have an order for a thousand cupcakes and I’m working on that. Care to help me?”
“I would love to,” I answered but shook my head. “But I’ve got to work on my blog. I’ve got plenty of free time now and no excuse not to.”
“Alright sweetheart,” Allison answered, then she refocused on mixing her batter again. Samuel hurried up to his bedroom and I also went up to mine. I didn’t think I could stay alone right now, so I decided to spend a few days at my dad’s.
At least when I’m around people, I don’t think of Josh often and my heart hurts less.

It wastime for my first ultrasound a few days later, and even though Josh was fully aware of the date, I didn’t think he would show up. He had made himself clear after I confessed my feelings. He couldn’t love me and that was alright.
The last thing I wanted was for Josh to hang around me simply because he felt responsible.
My dad was out of town for work now, so I could ask Allison to accompany me. After spending hours feeling sick in my bathroom that morning, I finally managed to get dressed and meet Allison in the kitchen.
“You look sick,” she said once she saw me walk in.
She shook her head, then waved at me to come sit. Allison offered me a mug of hot tea. I didn’t know what she called it, but I could smell mint, and it helped ease my nausea immediately after I took a sip.
“I feel sick,” I told her. “But this tastes really good.”
“It’s a secret recipe my grandmother taught me before she passed. She says it helped my mother when she was pregnant with me.”
“Did it help you too?” I asked as I enjoyed sipping from the mug again and letting the steam from it warm my insides.
“Nah, I didn’t have morning sickness at all,” she said then chuckled. “I feel sorry for you, actually. But once your baby comes you’ll love it so much and all of this won’t matter at all.”
A clanging sound reverberated through the air once Allison ended her statement. We both turned to see Samuel standing in a corner with his pajamas on and stainless bowl he had dropped to the ground. “I want to eat cereal mom,” he yelled in his high-pitched voice.
“You sure I won’t want to kill the baby once it comes?” I asked and Allison burst into a fit of laughter before she walked to Samuel, then touched his shoulder and scolded him.
“Don’t do that, honey. It’s rude and you’re going to upset mommy,” she said before pointing at the bowl. “Now pick that up or you won’t be getting any candy for the next month.”
Samuel did as she asked and after he left the kitchen, Allison said to me. “The candy threat always seems to work.”
I chuckled and lightened up a bit, then she asked. “Waffles?”
“No, I don’t think I can keep anything down,” I answered then rose to my feet. “Besides I have this ultrasound thing and I’m about to be late. Will you come with me? If you don’t mind of course. It’s my first ultrasound, and I don’t want to do it alone.”
“What about Josh?”
Her question reminded me of the ache in my heart. I thought I was handling it so well till she mentioned him.
“I don’t think Josh's coming,” I announced, and Allison dropped what she was holding, then walked to me. “I told him I loved him, and he completely freaked out on me then said he couldn’t love me back.”
“What?” she croaked. Color rushed to her cheeks, and she blinked twice before sympathizing with me. “Oh honey, that’s horrible,”
“Yeah, that’s what happened. So, I’m pregnant, alone and scared that I don’t know what I’m doing.”
I was feeling too emotional these days and I had applied a little concealer beneath my eyes to hide my dark circles. Crying now would make me ruin the makeup.
“I don’t want Josh around right now, so would you please come?”
“Yes, sure. I’ll shower and be right down so we can go. I’ll call my babysitter while I’m at it too.”
