“I’m sorry we’re out of that for now, but we do have some chocolate chip or zucchini chip cookies available?”

“What about cupcakes?” the lady answered. “I think my kids would love those.”

“We have those.”

I worked on her order and collected her cash payment before tuning on the volume of the speaker playing soft music.

The bell on the front door chimed again and this time when the door opened, Josh Sanders walked in.

The second I saw him, I froze, and my breath hitched in my throat. I couldn’t tell if he had the same reaction, but the right corner of his lips quirked up a bit before he got to the counter.

“Hey,” he greeted.

“Hi,” I answered. The heat returned and made my cheeks burn bright. “Uh … What would you like?”

“Can I place a delivery order for three dozen cookies,” he answered. “The crispy ones.”

He tapped his fingers on the counter, and I noticed how long, and lean they were. His eyes did not leave mine when I met his gaze again, and that grin stayed.

“Coming right up,” I said, then paused when I remembered he had said delivery. “Wait … Having a party or something?” I asked.

“Nothing of the sort.”

“Then why do you need three dozen cookies?”

Josh shrugged. “Let’s just say I have a sweet tooth,” he replied.

“Oh…” a smile formed on my lips too, and I was about to say more when I saw my father come into the bakery with Samuel. “I should get that order ready,” I said then turned away from him immediately to avoid my father noticing the blush on my cheeks.

When I got into the kitchen, Allison glanced up from what she was doing a little and asked. “Are you alright, dear? You look flushed.”

I chuckled and waved my hand as I replied. “It’s nothing … Just some customer flirting with me,” I told her.

“Ohh, is he cute?”

I rolled my eyes and laughed before replying. “Of course he is.”

Allison giggled too and I hoped my answer will kill her curiosity. I didn’t want her or anyone else to know I had the hots for Josh Sanders.

* * *

The weather worsened drasticallyover the next hour, and as I pulled to a halt at Josh Sanders beach house and got out of my father’s Benz, the wind flew hard against me. It ruffled my hair out of place and blew the scarf wrapped around my neck away.

I gasped and ran after it, but it was far gone before I could retrieve it. Sighing, I combed my fingers through my hair to arrange it a bit, then walked back to the car.

My heart was thumping wildly in my chest as I carried the basket of cookies to his house. I had tried to talk my way out of delivering the cookies to Josh, but Allison had been too preoccupied with baking a birthday cake for a client, and there was no one else she could send as all our riders were busy as well.

Not like there was anything wrong with delivering the cookies to Josh, but the fact that I didn’t know how to behave when I was around him made me a bit nervous. His eyes were too intense, and nothing had ever made me feel such tingles before. Not even my ex-boyfriend Michael Long.

My relationship with Michael was history now. It’s been six months since the break-up, I blocked him on every social media platform I could think of and cut all ties to for my mental health. I didn’t need a cheat in my life trying to sweet talk me back into a relationship.

Also, I needed to find my own path and discover for myself who I really wanted to be. Being in a relationship for years made me lose track of that as my wants and needs had been tied to Michael’s for a long time. Turned out he wasn’t worth my love in the end.

Three years,I thought and tried to push back the ache in my chest.

I got to the door and pressed the doorbell. The clouds rumbled at the same time the bell chimed, and I glanced back behind me to see the first drizzle of rain that dropped from the sky.

Oh no.
