Jason’s lips curled. “If there’s one thing I want, Nicholas Burns, it’s for me to be right there with you through it all—through every dark night and every sunny day, through every scream of fear and every cry of joy. I want to be there when it all goes down in flames, just as I want to be there when we rise from the ashes. I can’t imagine ever being without you again. Not in this life and not in whatever comes after. So, yes, my love, my answer is and always will beyes.”
Blood rushed to my ears. I jumped up, engulfing him in my arms. “We’re so weird.”
“I love being weird with you.” Jason pressed his lips to everything he could reach: my cheeks, my neck, my shoulders, my forehead.
The sound of the door next to us being unlocked didn’t interrupt our togetherness. We kept kissing as if we would never get the chance again once we left this cabin.
“Everyone still alive?” Jack asked as he kicked open the door.
Jason and I shared a last kiss before I turned my head to Jack. “He saidyes.”
The smile on Jack’s face could have lit up the night sky. “Congratulations.” He looked like a mess. His clothes were covered in blood, his hair disheveled as if he’d been fighting with the wolves—which wasn’t that far from the truth. “I’m so happy for you guys.”
He pulled his hand out of his jacket as he walked over to us, revealing the ring box I had lost earlier. “Here, man. I think you’ll need this.”
“Oh, hell yeah. You’re awesome, my man.” I took the box and turned to Jason, opening it to reveal the simple silver ring I had wanted to put on his finger an hour ago.
Jason extended his right hand to me, ready for what was about to come. As we touched, an electric jolt shot through my body to the back of my neck. I slid the cool silver onto his ring finger.
He held up his hand, inspecting it as if he had just received a new one. “Guess my biggest fear is gone now.”
“Did you know I was going to propose?” I asked.
“No,” he laughed. “This took me completely by surprise. Jack only told me about the fake blood and stuff.” He eyed Jack. “If I had known it wasn’t just a prank but the plan to propose, I wouldn’t have interfered with it.”
“I couldn’t spoil the whole thing, man,” Jack replied with a shake of his head.
“I seriously considered calling off everything we had planned for you,” Jason said. “And, hell, I didn’t think it would make you cry.”
“No, no! It was perfect. And I can’t believe you even filmed it all.” My whole body wanted to move, jump up and down, run a thousand miles, and touch Jason everywhere and with every part of my body. I turned my head to the ceiling because I had to scream it out to the world. “I’m going to be a married man.”
My scream was followed by cheers from the people waiting for us outside the cabin.
“Oh, that’s right,” I said. “Should we go say hello?”
I turned toward the door, but Jason stopped me. He pulled me into a kiss. His arms moved up and down my back until they reached my ass, squeezing it tightly. “This has been the best night of my life so far.” He moved his mouth to my ear. “And just so you know, it’s not over yet. I have another surprise for you when we get home.”
“Please let it be your dick,” I whispered back.
“Can I go now?” Jack asked to remind us he was still there and had probably heard everything.
Heat rushed to my head, and Jason blushed as well. I let go of him as if we had just been caught in the act and took a step toward Jack.
“Thanks, my friend. For picking up the ring after you fell on me, pretending to die, andeverything else.”
“You’re welcome.” Jack held on to the door handle as if he needed some support. “In return, I only have one favor to ask. Please, never make me a part of your weird pranks again, okay?” He looked at Jason. “Both of you.” With a last tired smile, he left the cabin.
Jason gave me a look, and after a second, we both burst out laughing.
“I guess he heard that,” I said.
“What do you think was more shocking to him? All that fake blood or hearing us talk about sex?”
“Definitely the latter.”
Jason wrapped his arm around my shoulder. “Come on, let’s relieve the others of their burden.” He kissed my cheek before leading me out of the cabin.
Jack was waiting by the police car with the other two, and when they saw us, all three of them applauded. We spent the next half hour revealing every little detail of everything that had gone into making this happen. I was in for a good shock when the old man pulled off his mask to reveal the short brown hair and youthful face of Alex.Who would’ve thought he was a double agent too?
