Now that Anais had settled in with the other enthralled and they were all eating and drinking together and keeping tabs on the locations of each of their owners, I could finally relax. She had managed to recover some of the former doubt and the vampires were mostly relaxing and paying her as little attention as they paid any enthralled at this stage.

I noticed that a lot of the vampires who were closest to Ludis hadn't arrived yet and it made me worry that they were having some kind of meeting somewhere. If they were talking, I was excluded and prior to two nights ago, I was finally being accepted into their inner circle and Ludis was beginning to trust me.

Anais had set me back and created distrust between Ludis and me and she was going to have to appear enthralled even more than she did now if we had any hope of winning it back.

Still, I had to hope there was time and I was going to make sure she finished him off and gained us both the satisfaction of seeing the little shit die at her hands.

When he did finally saunter into the room I had to do everything I could to hide the glances I sent his way and the tenseness I felt. I was talking to some of the other vampires about our next destination and if any of us would bother getting off the ship. No matter how much we could influence the ships to leave at certain times of day for the main port to embark and disembark, we couldn't do so every day.

It meant that most of us stayed aboard at each port unless there were specific safe houses in specific locations.

Ludis noticed me quickly and came my way.

“I thought we'd lost you in Vegas. Surprised you managed to get here so fast, but Butch here tells me that you've been letting that woman turn your head.” Ludis didn't sound pleased about it.

“Not until I checked her out for you. She's no hunter and she's now my enthralled.”

“And you sure she's not fooling you?” Ludis asked, not keeping his voice down. He looked over my shoulder at her and the room began to quieten, vampires noticing that the boss was here and he wasn't happy about something.

Just as he started to stroll to Anais, she looked our way and took in the quickly changing atmosphere in the room. I set my jaw and started to walk after him. At first it looked as if butch was going to get in my way, the muscular vampire shifting as if to block my path, but I shoved past him as if he wasn't even there.

No doubt he'd try to make me pay for that later, but I wasn't going to play nice if Ludis was about to try to kill Anais. If he so much as scratched her, I was going to kill him and every vampire near me and that included Butch.

To my surprise Anais beamed at seeing Ludis, got to her feet, handed her drink to one of the other enthralled, and came hurrying over to us. By the time she was close, I had drawn level with the vampire.

Ludis stopped, staring at her.

“Oh, how wonderful to see you again,” she said, almost purring her words as the enthralled had earlier. For anyone who had heard both and might suspect she wasn't enthralled still, it might seem a little suspicious, but Ludis lifted an eyebrow and relaxed a little. “I had no idea how amazing it could be to let someone like Drew take charge. He's really very skilled in many ways.”

Anais raised one arm and placed it along the top of mine so her hand was near my shoulder and neck and then leaned into me. “I promised I'd make it up to him for not believing him sooner,” she carried on, looking at me, even though it sounded as if she was talking to Ludis.

She glanced his way briefly before kissing me. I didn't have to fight my desire to pull her in closer, until my arms were around her, my hands on her back.
