“And I can take it from here,” she says.

“I’ll make sure she gets home.” And if that means getting in her asshole fiancé’s face and taunting him with how she came running to me, it’ll be my pleasure.

“All right.” Pez leaves, disappearing into the crowded aisle.

“Do you want to sit?” Nothing could ever replace the love I had for Cooper, but the way Indy is making me feel…I’m so fucking relieved to see her. Bated breath stupid.

“Yes.” She walks past me into the row, taking a seat in the middle.

I sit down beside her on the bench. The way I feel around her makes no fucking sense, and I don’t even care, because her thigh is pressed to mine. And if I don’t squeeze my arms to my sides then our shoulders rub too. “What are you doing here, Indy?”

“I needed to make sure you were all right.” Her eyes are red rimmed. “And to apologize for ghosting you. Things got too complicated with Gray.”

Indy crying twists me up inside. “Tell me you didn’t come here to make it clear that we’re not going to see each other anymore.”

“No.” She stares straight ahead, her fingers gripping the edge of the bench.

“Gray must be furious.” His name leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

“We broke up.” She rubs a fingertip along the skin under her eyes.

“I’m sorry.” I don’t mean it. At least not when it means she’s here. But a part of me does wish that it didn’t mean she has to hurt. And it’s clear that she is. “Perhaps give him time to cool down.”

“It was my decision.” She lifts and drops her shoulders. “I gave him his ring back.”

“Oh.” I have no clue what to say. I seek out that diamond that has been on her finger since the beginning. She’s right…it’s no longer there. Only the faintest tan line hints that it used to be. My grip on the bottle between my hands tightens. My heart pounds far harder than it did in the fight. “So what now?”

“Friends, I guess.” She lifts those pretty whiskey orbs to meet mine.

“Friends…” It makes sense.

“Maybe we can start working on the bucket list again?” She stares at me expectantly while she holds her breath.

“I’d like that.” Spending time with her and helping her with her bucket list is enough. “Why don’t I find a bathroom to wash up in and then we go get some food and figure out a game plan? We’ve got some catching up to do.”

She nods so I take her hand and guide her through the crowd, leaving the unopened bottle of Jameson on my seat.

I’m quick in the bathroom and then we find the club exit.

“Where do you want to go?” she asks as I hold the door open for her.

“I know this great place to get pancakes.” I smile.

“It seems fitting.” She chuckles as we walk toward my truck.

A big, fat drop of rain splats on my face. Another follows it.

“It’s raining.” She stretches out her arms to catch the drops as she tips her face to the sky.

Kissing in the rain. It’s on her list. But it was supposed to be Gray she was kissing. Gray who held onto her so tightly she could barely breathe. Now she’s free… “How did you convince him to let you go?”

Her eyes widen. She shoves damp tresses away from her face. “I told him I slept with you.”

“Yeah?” My whole body starts to tremble, I want to kiss her so bad. I want it to mean that she feels what’s between us as much as I do. “But we both know that’s a lie.”

“I lied. Does it matter?” She darts the tip of her tongue over her bottom lip and swallows.

“I didn’t.”
