As soon as we entered the main room where the bar was located, I dropped her hand like a hot cake. The last thing I needed was for anyone to get the wrong idea. My brothers took ribbing to a whole new level when it suited them.
Plus, Jillian would be there.
Chapter 5
Leona
As soon as we stepped into the main room, I noticed that it was considerably busier than it had been when we’d first arrived. The table we’d been sitting at with Wolfe was now full of bikers, as were other tables. There were also women in the room.
Without warning, Eagle dropped my hand. A glance at him revealed that he was looking across the room at a particular brunette. She was pretty; slim, and taller than me. Judging by his reaction, I wondered if she was Eagle’s girlfriend. I thought about that kiss we’d shared, and scowled. He hadn’t kissed me like he had a girlfriend.
Several other women joined her just before we disappeared into the kitchen.
“Oh, good, someone’s in here,” Eagle said with relief to the woman who was in the process of fixing a sandwich. She gave him a smile before turning back to what she was doing. “Can you make another one of those for Leo, sweetheart?”
“I can make my own sandwich,” I said, not wanting to put anyone out. “And my name is Leona.”
“That’s okay, I don’t mind.” She gave me a smile. “My name’s Val. I’m Bear’s old lady.”
Val was beautiful and looked familiar to me. She had a full figure, and the most beautiful blue eyes I’d ever seen. Her strawberry blond hair was pulled up into a top bun.
“Val, don’t let Leo out of your sight.” Eagle’s refusal to call me by my full name caused me to press my lips in irritation. “I got something to take care of.” And just like that Eagle was gone.
I shrugged in response to Val’s inquisitive look. “Where have I seen you before?”
“If you’re into beauty and fashion you might have seen an article I’ve written. I freelance, and sometimes they include a photo of me with the article.”
“That’s probably it.” I was impressed and moved closer. “Can I help?”
“I got it, thanks. So are you and Eagle friends?”
I decided to be honest. “Not really.”
Val raised a brow and waited for me to explain.
“Long story,” I offered, not really wanting to go into it. I supposed that I could have explained my situation to her, but didn’t think it would benefit me. My knowledge about motorcycle clubs was enough to understand what position the old ladies held, and that their loyalty was with their men.
“I see. Do you like ham and Swiss cheese?”
“Yes, thanks. I haven’t met Bear yet.”
Val laughed, and I could tell by her expression that she was head over heels in love with the man. “You’ll know him when you see him. He’s the biggest one here and looks just like a big, cuddly teddy bear.” She pointed towards the plate of sandwiches. “This is a snack for him.”
“Have you been together long?”
“About a year. My best friend, Ella, is Wolfe’s old lady. We got involved with the club around the same time.”
I recalled the women that I’d seen out in the bar area. “Are there a lot of old ladies?”
Val shook her head and handed me a plate with a stacked sandwich on it. “Just us two at the moment. Though I expect that will change soon. Eagle has his eye on Jillian. Lynx is smitten with Lola. Buck loves Delta, and has for a long time. She’s Wolfe’s sister. My money is on them becoming a couple next.”
So, Eagle did have a girlfriend. I wondered if Jillian was the one who’d caught his eye earlier, and if he was with her now. I tried not to care, but I couldn’t get that kiss off my mind, and the electric awareness that existed between us. It hadn’t been normal. He had a lot of nerve, kissing me like that when he had a girlfriend!
I took a bite of the sandwich.
“You want to come out and sit with me and Bear? Some of the others will probably join us.”
Did I want to mingle with the others? “Make some new friends,” as Eagle had sarcastically put it? The truth was that I liked people, and it would seem weird to sit in the kitchen alone while I ate. I could hear the music from the other room, along with the muted sounds of laughter and conversation. Maybe if I got friendly enough with someone I could hitch a ride home, A possibility that caused me to smile. Wouldn’t Eagle be pissed!
