I was fucking glad that we’d decided to play house to see how things would work out. It hadn’t taken long for her crazy to come out. The sweet little schoolteacher had turned into a screaming lunatic at the drop of a hat, and everything that I’d thought was beautiful about her had turned dark and sour fast. I was fairly certain that she had bipolar disorder or a split personality and needed to be on medication.
Seeing Mandy earlier that day had pissed me off. If Leo hadn’t been inside the office I wouldn’t have reacted so hostilely towards her. I didn’t like surprises, especially not the unwelcome kind, and I sure as fuck didn’t want Leo to end up in the middle of an unpleasant situation. A crazy, unpredictable ex could send the other person involved in a relationship running, and now that I’d decided I wanted Leo in my life I would protect her. She didn’t strike me as being weak, though, and thank fuck for that.
I laid back next to her with a heavy sigh and closed my eyes, realizing that relaxing beneath the warm sun was causing me to grow tired. Leo’s soft snores revealed that she’d drifted off. I grinned and listened to them for a minute before turning toward her and wrapping my arm over her body. She instinctively turned and tucked her body against mine before we settled into a spooning position. I buried my nose against the side of her neck and told myself not to fall asleep.
And that’s the last thing I remembered.
Chapter 29
Leona
It had been two days since Eagle and I had spent the late afternoon at the lake. We’d roused from our impromptu nap to the eerie sound of an owl hooting in the tree above us, and the sun going down. We’d never had that swim, but we had enjoyed another round of amazing sex beneath the sky as the moon and stars had made themselves known. Eagle was a generous and considerate lover, and so unlike the other men that I’d been with that I knew he’d ruined me for anyone else. Not that I wanted anyone else. And he’d made it clear before he’d taken me home that I was his.
At first, I wasn’t sure how I’d felt about his arrogant declaration. Something about it had felt overly possessive and archaic. But when I’d considered his club, and the way that Wolfe and Bear treated Ella and Val, I’d realized that this was the biker culture, and that it was more about protection than ownership. With the threat of rival clubs coming at them at any time, they had to be assertive. Those men cared deeply for their women and would do anything for them.
I was eager to spend more time with Eagle. I wanted to get to know the man I was beginning to care for. I had three months before Ron’s lease was up on the house to do it before I decided where to go from there. In a few days I was going to dinner with Eagle at his Aunt May’s, and who better to get to learn more about him from than the woman who’d raised him? For all his bad-ass biker persona he displayed on the outside, I was beginning to see there was a lot more to Eagle on the inside.
Tonight, he was coming to my house for dinner.
I was sure that sometime during his visit, sex would be on the table. I was counting on it, and I had changed my sheets for the occasion—if we even made it to my bed. My pussy started to tingle just thinking about what that man did to me, no matter where we were. When the mood struck Eagle, Eagle struck, and I would end up having the best orgasms of my life. How lucky was I that the man in my life knew how to use his talented tongue and big cock?
I clenched my thighs together when I realized my clit was throbbing with anticipation, and felt my panties grow wet. I willed the feeling away so I could get on with my work. I hadn’t realized how long I’d been sitting at my desk daydreaming about Eagle until the door to the office opened. When I glanced up, it was like having a glass of cold water thrown in my face, and I was immediately clear-headed and alert. I straightened with concern when I was suddenly faced with an irate ex.
Mandy stormed right up to my desk. Her eyes narrowed with the kind of emotion that also colored her face a heated red. Her clenched fists made her look unhinged and slightly threatening. I forced myself to take a calming breath as my heart began to race. I had to remind myself that she was there for Eagle, not me.
“Eagle is mine!” Mandy hissed, bending down to get into my face. “Do you hear me, bitch?! He. Is. Mine.” She was breathing loudly through her nose, her lips pinched together when she stopped talking.
So she was there for me. I wondered how she had found out about Eagle and me. Despite her threatening presence, I forced myself to remain calm and glanced toward the door that led to the service department, before remembering that the men had been called in to church and weren’t there. I was all alone with Mandy.
Noticing my look, she shook her head, an unflattering sneer twisting her features. “Don’t bother. I know they’re not there.”
How had she known that? Had she been watching?
She inhaled several heavy breaths, getting herself worked up even further. “I knew as soon as I saw you that you were involved with him! And I’m here to tell you to stay the fuck away from him! I saw you two fucking out at the lake the other day.”
I caught my breath, really afraid for the first time since she’d arrived.
“That was our special place! Do you hear me?!” She began to pace like an angry tiger in a cage.
Ohmygod! The woman was dangerous! How had she gotten that close to us without us knowing? “How—”
She halted long enough to face me, raising a brow as a smirk settled on her face. “How did I know?” She threw her head back and laughed like a demented fiend. “Because I know Eagle, you stupid bitch! We’ve been together a long time! I know what he likes! I know where he likes to fuck his women! You thought you were special?”
My mind flashed back to when I’d asked Eagle that very question that day at the clubhouse. Doubt started to seep in.
Mandy huffed and began to pace again. “You bitches are all alike. Pouncing on a man as soon as there’s a little trouble between him and his woman. You think he wants you?”
When she stopped and leaned over my desk again I reared back, resisting the urge to roll my chair further away from her. My gaze began to move over my desk as I searched for something I could use as a weapon if I needed it. I didn’t offer her an answer because I sensed she wasn’t expecting one.
“I’ll let you in on a little secret,” she began in a conspiratorial whisper. “This is what we do.” She paused, as if giving me time to reach a conclusion on my own. Then she rolled her eyes and straightened. “Stupid, stupid, bitch! Max and I have had several breakups during our relationship. He likes variety, so he instigates a fight and we split up. Once he’s fucked whoever out of his system, he comes back to me! ALWAYS! He thinks I don’t know what he's doing, that I wouldn’t let him stray if we were together, but I would.”
Now I knew she was crazy. What woman in their right mind would let a man she was in a relationship with have sex with other women?
She took a breath. “When you love a man that much, you look the other way! That’s why he always comes back to me!”
Mandy was delusional. If she really believed what she was saying, then why was she so upset? Why not let what she thought this was just run its course? So much didn’t make sense, but she had called him Max, and I sensed that Eagle didn’t let just anyone call him by his real name. Had she heard him tell me his name at the lake? But then I reminded myself that they had history.
The phone on the desk rang, and I reached for it.
