A moment later, Pascal appears with the ring box. “You’re all good to go, Mr. Spencer.” He moves to hand me the velvet box but Ramsey intercepts.

“Oh, let me see what you picked out.”

He opens the box and his jaw drops to the floor.

“What the hell is this?!” he exclaims.

Pascal turns the box back toward himself, clearly wanting to make sure that he put the right ring inside. He doesn’t know that Ramsey’s reaction is because he had no idea I was looking at rings today.

When I asked Ramsey to make me the appointment, I didn’t tell him what it was for.

His reaction is the reason why.

“I thought you were getting her earrings. Some nice two-carat diamond studs to commemorate the fundraiser showcase tonight. You know, like a good billionaire fake boyfriend would do.” He gestures to the ring, which he’s removed from the ring box and is waving around wildly. “This isn’t earrings, Rhys.”

“I know. I—" I start to explain, but he cuts me off.

“I can’t believe that Lettie is going along with this. You know, she is one of the best humans I’ve ever met, but agreeing to a fake engagement so you can upstage Jerrod is another level.”

My mouth opens to speak, but I don’t know what I’d say. I haven’t mentioned anything to Lettie yet. Picking out a ring is more than premature, it’s ridiculous. But I can’t tell Ramsey that. Besides, I’m planning to talk to Lettie, to ask her, but with her fundraiser showcase tonight, I haven’t had a chance.

“Look at my baby all grown up,” Ramsey teases, he hands me the ring box, then holds up his phone to take a picture of me. He sniffs and pretends to wipe a tear. His panic from a moment ago nowhere to be found. “I never thought this day would come.”

“Fuck off,” I growl.

“So touchy.” Ramsey opens the ring box again; this time his shock is replaced by awe. “How many carats?” he asks Pascal.

“Six point one four,” Pascal responds.

Ramsey lets out a low whistle. “Damn. I need a fake boyfriend who wants to shower me with lavish gifts.”

“You’re coming to the fundraiser tonight?” I ask, hoping to change the subject.

“Lettie invited me personally, so of course I’m coming. And, I have a little bit of a crush on Sebastian so that’s fun.”

“Sebastian?” I ask.

“Yeah, Lettie’s dance partner.”

“He’s gay?”

“Um, yeah.” Ramsey shoots me a look of annoyance. Like I exhaust him.

He’s one to judge.

“Huh, I didn’t realize.”

“It was probably hard to see through all that jealous rage.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Lettie told me you were jealous of Sebastian giving her a massage. You even growled. That’s so not like you.”

“That’s a normal boyfriend reaction.”

Ramsey wiggles his brows. “A normalfakeboyfriend reaction?”

He’s trying to get a reaction out of me, but I won’t give it to him. “I’ve got to play my part, don’t I?”
