Angus winked at Arty. “Flowers are the best, lad. Ye need to get one like Petunia here in yer life. Ye’ll never be sorry.”

Arty blushed, Pete giggled, and Poppy groaned and tried not to roll her eyes. It hurt when she rolled her eyes.

Chapter 16

It was after midnightby the time Angus had finally gotten Edna and Ralston back to their quarters and Poppy settled in bed. Edna had been very distraught over the whole thing and she didn’t know the half of it. Ralston had helped her back to their quarters where Edna had meds waiting for her.

Andrea called on Poppy’s cell and he was telling her that rushing over wouldn’t solve anything except to disturb the children. Poppy had taken a pain pill and was in no shape to see anyone anyway.

“Is Mom really all right, Angus? I was so worried when Morgan got that call from Vince and went running out. If it hadn’t been for the kids, he would never have been able to keep me from going with him. Thank God you were with her.”

“She will be, Andrea,” Angus assured her. “Yer mum is an amazing woman. She saved my life tonight, ye have every reason to be proud of her.” Angus could hear her snort of derision and grinned.

“It would have been better if she hadn’t gone at all, but that’s Mom for you. She never was one to back down from a hard choice. Her life has been crazy this last year; I’m surprised she’s still sane.”

When the doorbell chimed, Angus rang off and went to answer it. That should be Vince and Morgan. He looked through the peephole, saw it was them and opened the door to let them in. He led them through to Julian’s study where he closed the door behind them.

Morgan was the first to speak. “What’s up, Angus?”

Vince eyed the liquor cabinet. “Any possibility of a drink?”

Both men were looking tired, but then so was he. “It’s no my house, but I’m sure Poppy wouldn’t mind if ye wanted to help yerself,” Angus replied. “I asked ye here because I wanted ye to listen to something before I turn it over to the police chief in the morning. When ye are ready, gents.”

Vince poured himself a shot of whiskey and sat down in the conversation area in the study near the fireplace where Angus and Morgan had seated themselves. “What’s this all about, Angus?”

Angus held up his cell phone. “I took the precaution of settin’ my phone to silent and record just before Poppy and I went in. Let’s just say it answers a lot of questions ye didn’t even know ye had yet.” He pushed the button and sat back as the men listened to what had recorded.

“My God.” Morgan’s stunned expression echoed what they were all feeling as the recording ended.

Angus nodded. “Morgan, I especially wanted ye to hear it because I’m no convinced that the chief will share with yer organization. He’s already sniffin’ up Poppy’s tree even when he has Nesbitt in custody. How well she’s covered her tracks could be the difference in no bein’ able to clear Poppy of all suspicion of her husband’s murder. I want that fer her,” he added simply.

“Can you send a copy of that to my cell phone?” Morgan asked.

Vince spoke up. “I haven’t had a chance to tell you, but I got to see the coroner’s report regarding Adrian. It’s how I suspected Angus and Poppy might be in serious trouble.”

Morgan frowned. “How did you get that already?”
