He chuckled, groaning at the obvious pain and I sat up. “Oh my god, honey, I’m sorry.”

He tugged me back down and stroked my hair. “I’m okay, Callie. And Wolf’s been dealt with.”

“Sorry to interrupt,” Eldie said, breezing into the room. “I need to get you checked out and give you some pain meds.”

I moved to get up, but Sweet Pea held firm. “You’ll need to do that with Callie right where she is.”

Eldie smiled. “Okay, buddy, I’ll do my best.”

As Eldie did a quick wound check, I stayed put, but didn’t fully relax until morphine was once again coursing through Sweet Pea’s veins and the pain etched in the tight features of his face eased. He held me until he fell asleep and I would have stayed longer, but my bladder had decided it was time for me to move, so I did my thing, then tried to get comfortable in the chair.

A quiet moan from Sweet Pea had me up and at his bedside again. “Are you in pain?”

“Just my heart,” he said melodramatically.

“Oh, lawd.”

He reached for my hand. “Where’d you go?”

“To pee,” I said.

“Get back in here.”

“Are you sure?”

“I sleep better with you here, baby.”

“Okay,” I said, and climbed back onto the mattress.

Sweet Pea pulled me closer and I kissed him gently. “I love you, Pea. Thank you for not dying.”

“Love you, too, baby.” He kissed my temple. “And you’re welcome.”

“Do you need more meds?”

“No, I’m good. You make the pain go away.”

“Oh my god, stop. What the hell is wrong with you?”

He chuckled. “Ow.”

I reached for his pain pump button and pressed it.

“That’s nice,” he rasped, and I felt his body relax.

“Go to sleep, Pea,” I ordered. “I’ll be here when you wake up.”

“Okay, baby.”

Once I knew he was asleep, I allowed myself to fall into the abyss as well, and I did it with a relieved smile. There was nothing better than being curled up against my man where I knew he was safe and sound.
