It takes me a minute before I move my arm, you know those tingles when your arm falls asleep hurt like a bitch. And I’m a pussy when it comes to that, I can admit it.
“I didn’t mean to fall asleep on you.” She looks at me, bright green eyes take me in. “How long was I out?” She glances out the window. “Where are we?”
“We only have about forty-five minutes left until we reach the cabin, but we need to stop and get some groceries or something for the cabin. We’ll have dinner tomorrow night at the rehearsal and the wedding will be covered, but we’re going to need lunches and breakfast,” I explain.
“Good thinking.” She smiles, and for the first time since we’ve reconnected, she almost doesn’t seem repulsed to be around me.
I tap a few buttons on my screen, adding the nearest grocery store to our trip and follow the directions.
“You know you still say my name in your sleep,” I tease.
She didn’t, and probably for a good reason because I’d have pulled the truck over if she did.
“I do not.” She glances at me with wide eyes. “Did I?” Her chin drops slightly in question.
I stare at her before barking out a laugh that makes her roll her eyes in response. “No, but damn you fall for my shit so easy still.”
“Ugh, it’s going to be a long weekend,” she says again for the fifteenth time on this trip.
“The longest.” I wink, before hitting my blinker and following the directions toward the grocery store.
It doesn’t take too much longer before we’re pulling up outside of Food City. We climb out of the truck and I immediately stretch. I’ve been stuck in the same position for hours, and my knees are aching from hardly any movement.
Kameron comes around the truck from behind me and I hear something hit the ground. Spinning, I find her bending to pick up her phone and purse, a slight pink tinge covers her cheeks and I smirk to myself.
“You were just checking me out, huh?” I tease. God, I fucking love to tease her.
“I was not.” She snatches her phone, shoving it into her purse before standing and stomping past me toward the entrance.
I chuckle, not saying a word and following behind.
She grabs a cart as soon as we step inside, and begins grabbing a few of the essentials.
“What sounds good this weekend?” she asks, grabbing eggs and bread.
“I’ll make you some pancakes.” I reach over her, grabbing the bag of my favorite premix pancakes with plenty of protein so I don’t feel like shit for indulging in them.
She groans, “It’s been so long since I’ve had your pancakes.”
“Grab the syrup.” I tap her arm with my finger before taking over pushing the cart.
We stand in front of the syrup, trying to decide which to get. I typically always buy the sugar free, but Kameron isn’t as big of a health nut as I am most days.
“We could just grill the rest of the time, that’s simple enough,” I offer, I’ve never actually cooked a meal for her, other than my protein pancakes so this is exciting for me.
“Sounds good to me.”
We walk beside each other, stopping at the produce sections and getting everything we want.
Kameron is a sucker for cabbage on the grill topped with a large amount of butter, salt and pepper. I’m more of an asparagus guy.
We grab steaks, burgers, chicken, anything we want for the grill we just tossed into the cart. Even knowing we’re only going to be cooking a few meals, but we’re also starving right now so I’m excited to get to our destination and fire up the grill for the night.
As usual, we both argue at checkout over who’s going to pay. She feels like she owes me this, even though she’s doing me just as much of a favor as I’m doing her.
In the end, I won by plucking her debit card from her fingers and depositing it in my back pocket before sliding mine into the card slot.
We grab our bags and both walk side by side to the truck.
