“Because I am sure he doesn’t want to be seen as a mistake.”
“This isn’t your business,” Becca says as she pushes her son behind her.
“Isn’t it? You ruined a marriage. A man died. A woman blamed herself for years. You sure this isn’t my business when I am the one that picked that woman up off the ground?”
“I—she—”
“I think you should leave, Becca,” I say with disgust in my voice.
She looks at Jessica before looking back at me. Without a word, she grabs her son’s hand and walks away.
“I didn’t want her to find out like this,” Jessica tells me.
“You knew this whole time?”
Jessica nods as tears fall down her face. “I just wanted to protect her. I didn’t want her heart to break all over again.”
“Where did she go?”
Jessica looks me in the eye, her face fallen. “I don’t know. I came out here just after Becca showed up. All I saw was her running.”
“Where the hell would she run to?”
“I don’t know. I really don’t know.”
I call her and she doesn’t answer. I get in my SUV and head back to the hotel, but she isn’t there. Her parents don’t know where she went or how she would have gotten anywhere. Her sister is just as lost as I am.
She told me she would never do this.
Never leave without an explanation.
I call her over and over, hoping she will pick up.
But I am not sure she ever will.
To be continued…
