“Avery, I told you not to buy for me.”
“Yeah, and I told you the same. But yet here we are.”
“It’s different. I can—”
He stopped, nearly choking on his words before he said them.
“Afford it?” I offered, tilting my head.
“That’s not how I meant it.”
“I know. But it’s the truth.”
“Things are just different. You have a child to buy for. That’s where your money should go, Avery. Not on stuff for me.”
“Well, I did spend money on her. A lot of it thanks to the generous bonus I got. But I also had enough to get for those I love...”
It was my turn to let the words die on my tongue as I said them. I rubbed my lips together and quickly tried to look away before his fingers grabbed my chin and redirected me to look at him.
“I’m sorry, what was that?” he asked, the grin on his face matching the humor in his eyes.
“Nothing. I just meant that I bought gifts for people in my life who I like very much.”
“Stop lying to me.”
“Fine,” I said, widening my eyes and blowing out a breath. “Love. For people Ilove.”
“You love me?” He pulled his lower lip between his teeth, still grinning at me.
I could feel the heat from his body as he pulled me closer.
“Yes, Sam. I love you. There, are you happy?”
“Happier than you could ever know. I love you too, Avery.”
His smile was contagious as I started grinning back at him.
He pulled me tighter as his lips feathered over mine.
“Since Kennedy is having a sleepover tonight, would you like to have a sleepover with me in my bed?” he offered.
“Are you asking me to sleep with you?” I teased, narrowing my eyes at him.
“Yes.”
“As in have sex with you or as in actually sleep with you?”
“Both.”
I giggled as he bent down and tossed me over his shoulder, carrying me to his room.
We’d only had sex once, and while it was hot, it was also rushed and in his office. Having the entire house to ourselves without having to worry about any interruptions would be pure heaven.
