I won, then I went on to win again, and again, until I was approached by a team manager. He wanted me to join his team. With Tanner’s help, I went through the contract. The amount of money they were offering was beyond any dream I could ever have, but it was real and I have been with them ever since. My skill and ability took the race world by surprise and my name buzzed around every circuit and every motorcycle newspaper and magazine.
Tanner never left my side, traveling everywhere with me, and his sudden death knocked me on my ass. Such a strong, amazing man was gone in a heartbeat—or, through the lack of a heartbeat as his heart simply gave up one day. He saw me win my first championship title and, I think, him standing by my side was one of the proudest moments of his life. It was certainly one of mine.
My cell pings again, an unknown number but the message is the same:
Let me help
I know you didn’t do it,
You were with me all night
C
I ignore it and block that number too. Firing up my computer, I get online to order a new cell phone and sim card. I need to keep him out of it; what we had was private, it was special, and not for prying eyes, ready to voice their opinions and cast judgement.
It’s up to me and my attorney to get this right and keep me out of jail.
