“Yeah, but he is super rare.” The wolf-shifter shrugs.

“You’re rare?” I bite my lip so a million questions don’t pour out of my face. “I mean, it makes sense. Most legends are probably close to truths, yeah?”

“In my case, yes. I come back to life, and I have a bird form.”

He doesn’t sound like he wants to talk about it, so I let it drop. “Thank you for sharing. I won’t pester you any more about how cool you are.”

A strange expression passes over his face. Disappointment, perhaps?

REMEMBERED

JADE

The day has been lovely, spending time with all four of them.

Then they inform me they need to catch up on their normal routine of patrols for ASO activity.

By the evening, I’m feeling healthier, emotionally and physically, but also tired.

Currently, I’m curled up on the couch with my head on Maxum’s lap as he reads and idly strokes my hair. I love that the demon is so well-read. That alone could make me fall for him, never mind all the sexy he has going on otherwise.

As much as I love his affection, I need a proper sleep. “I’m heading to Arran’s bed to sleep for the night,” I say.

At the same moment, Calder rushes inside the safe house, looking about ready to burst into flames. “There’s been another ASO attack. An explosion.”

“Where?” Maxum shoots up from his seat.

“The supes’ community center,” Calder reports.

“Was anyone hurt? The younglings there?” Maxum’s red fists are clenched so hard they are almost white.

“It’s chaos. People were inside. They need help. Arran and Flint are already there.”

Maxum looks at me, and I can see it written on his face clearly. He wants to go help, but he doesn’t want to leave me alone either.

“Go,” I urge him. “I’ll be okay. I’m just going to bed. No one knows about this place, right?”

“She’s right,” Calder says, but he still looks like I’m about to betray them. Damn, I was hoping we’d made progress today. “Let’s go.”

Maxum rushes over to me and gives me a passionate kiss. “Stay safe, sweet witch.”

He rushes out the door, unfurling his enormous wings as soon as he’s outside the front door.

Damn, that’s hot.

Calder doesn’t immediately follow. Instead, he uses this rare moment alone to threaten me. “If you betray us or hurt one of them through your callous, witchy ways, Iwillend you.”

“I don’t havewitchyways.” I glower at him, refusing to let him intimidate me, although he should terrify me. “If anyone gets hurt, it’s going to be me. By the way, I’m not an asshole. And I don’t betray or hurt people intentionally.”

“Watch your step.” In a blink of an eye, Calder is out the door and soaring after Maxum.

I slam the door shut and lock it.

It’s eerie being left alone in the guys’ house. After checking on my pets, and the doors and windows, I curl up in Arran’s bed and fall asleep.
