I fall asleep peacefully. It’s the first time I’ve had a good night’s rest in years.
* * *
I wake to Jade’s groan and gasp of surprise that I’m basically on top of her—in my wolf form, unfortunately.
Her eyes are shadowed. I’m worried that Osen harmed her with his possession. Is his spirit draining her life force?
“What a weird night,” she moans. “Sorry if I made out with your nose last night. I thought you were someone else.” She chuckles to herself, but sounds depressed. “I had some strange, upsetting dreams.”
I don’t want to move away so she can get up. I want to snuggle with her longer, because today, I’m supposed to disappear from her life.
My mind scrambles to find any excuse to stay. But Osen doesn’t remember his death, and Maxum will drag me out of here, and in the process, possibly hurt Jade. I can’t have that. Besides, the longer I stay, the more likely she will catch me. She won’t be happy with me. I’m betraying her trust by being here. And I’m beginning to feel guilty.
“Beast?” She gently strokes my neck. “Are you okay? You aren’t usually this clingy.”
Realizing I’m acting the fool Osen accused me of being, I stand up and jump off the bed.
She stretches, and her sleep shirt lifts up, revealing her belly. When she walks to the bathroom, her tiny sleep shorts highlight her full ass.
How I want to sink into that soft heat.
I’m falling for a witch? When the fuck did this happen?
Does it count against me when she doesn’t know she’s one?
When I hear her groan at her reflection, I’m upset by Osen’s behavior last night. He had always skirted the morally gray area, but now? Maybe death changes a person.
What am I saying… it does.
Yet, Osen was always anti-witch, ever since he was a young man and had been tortured by one. That was well before he had fully come into his powers. He let his guard down again with Tanil, and that backfired. I don’t blame him for being anti-witch.
I have my own painful history with witches. But Jade doesn’t seem like she would ever hurt me… not on purpose, anyway. She really is different.
Wondering what I should do about Osen, Jade, and all these lies, I contemplate leaving and coming back in my human form to date her. But I’m afraid Maxum fucked that up. She won’t trust me after he upset her. Nor should she.
Besides, she definitely won’t trust me if she finds out about the supernatural world and realizes I’ve been masquerading as her pet doggie.
I’m screwed.
If that weren’t enough, I can’t trust my monstrous beast to leave her unscathed—physically or mentally. She might read and write monster fucking books, but that doesn’t mean she actually wants to be in danger.
And she would be in danger.
Jade comes out of the bathroom, freshly showered, with only a small towel wrapped around her voluptuous body. I contemplate tugging on the cloth. She slips into the closet and wisely shuts the door. Her instincts must sense something isn’t quite right with me. After all, she doesdreamthat I’m thealphaholefrom the bar.
Fully dressed, Jade comes out of the closet and heads to the kitchen. “I have to run some errands and get some food for all of us.” She snatches up her keys and purse and opens the back door. “Be a good boy, and I’ll bring home some yummy treats.”
As soon as she closes the door behind me, I realize what I need to do.
Beast must run away.
