Finn bit his bottom lip, his eyes tearing up. He nodded once, the action seemingly the only thing he could manage.
Ryan reached forward to reverently touch the tiny hand that was shoved up near his scrunched-up, just-born face. “Look at what you did, Darb. He’s perfect. Finn’s perfect.”
Darby’s tear-streaked face tilted to look at her husband. Pride and happiness poured from her. “Whatwedid.”
If it was possible, Ryan’s grin grew even larger. “Yeah, we did, didn’t we?”
The loud rattle of a hospital gurney invaded their space and faces turned toward it. Wardsmen lowered it down as far as it could go and the doctor and nurses helped Darby onto it.
The doctor stood and rubbed her hands on the seat of her pants, looking around the group as the wardsmen wheeled Darby and the baby in through the doors. “Well, that was our excitement for the day. We’ll go check them both out properly and see you all in the room. There’s a waiting room inside and to your left. Wait there until one of the nurses comes for you.”
She bustled off, leaving Millie and the rest of them on the lawn. An expectant hush fell over the group.
Ed was the first to recover. He clapped his hands together and said, “Come on, then. You heard the lady. Let’s go wait inside. I’m sure we can find a cuppa in there somewhere.”
Millie laughed. Ed had always been of the opinion that there was nothing a good cup of tea couldn’t fix.
They all entered the hospital, the wide double doors closing quietly behind them.
