The line goes quiet for a few seconds before the soft tone is his voice hardens.
“Who is this? Where is Ashlynn?”
His voice is cold and lethal. Just the sound of it has a set of chills running down my body. This isn’t what I pictured the loving Uncle Luc to be like, that is for sure.
“This is Tasha, I am Alessandro’s nanny. We were all at the family fun center and Ashlynn’s water broke. She is having contractions and asked me to call you. We are on our way to the hospital now.”
I hear a muffled curse as he speaks lowly to someone before the sound of car doors shutting sound through the speaker as a familiar voice comes through the phone.
“Tasha?” Giovanni asks clearly surprised.
“Hey. I take it you guys are on your way?”
“Yeah, but we are at least 5 hours away right now.”
I look over to see a pained look on Ashlynn’s face as she goes through another contraction. I lower my voice as I look out the window to try to conceal my words so that I don’t stress her out more than she probably already is.
“I am no expert, but I don’t think that she is going to have 5 hours.”
“We will be there as soon as we can.”
“Okay, I won’t leave her side.”
I go to hang up when I hear him call my name.
“Tasha…thank you. I am sure in his panic Luca didn’t have the time to thank you for calling.”
I smile at the softness his voice has. It is something that I haven’t heard too often but when I do, it sends my heart into a fluttering fit.
“Of course.”
“I will see you soon,” he says with a promise that makes my stomach dip in anticipation.
When we hang up, I slip Ashlynn’s phone back into her purse before I turn to check on her.
“How are you doing, Hun?”
She gives me a forced smile. “I have been better,” she laughs.
I smile. “Well Luca and Giovanni are on their way. They will be here before you know it.”
She inhales sharply as she looks up at me. “You are lying, aren’t you? They aren’t even in New York yet, are they?”
I give her a confident smile. “They will be here before you know it.”
She lets out a humorless laugh. “Telling me what I want to hear. Good choice.”
I laugh and nod as I resume rubbing her back. “Do you need anything? Do you have everything you need for the hospital?”
She shakes her head. “No, it’s all at home.”
I nod before I turn to the men in the front. “Uh guys? Are there more of you that could get her hospital bag?”
The older man turns around and nods before he pulls out his phone and starts sending a message.
“Thank you, Freddy,” Ashlynn grits through clenched teeth.
“Of course, Miss Ashlynn,” he replies.
