“Are you okay?” He asks.
I nod tersely which he seems to accept. He leans over and grips the handle of his knife, yanking it out of the man’s neck, causing blood to spurt from the newly opened hole as blood begins to rush out of him. He makes a few gargled noises for a bit before he becomes quiet, his body relaxing until he lays there motionless.
Alec uses the knife to quickly cut through my ties before he helps me stand.
“I told you to run, Kitty Cat.”
I look up to him, my legs shaking with this newly required effort before I shake my head.
“I am sick of running, Alec.”
“Maybe, but you were safe.”
“Was I though? Let’s be real, I haven’t been safe a day in my life. The threat has always been there, same with the risks. We both know that.
His jaw tenses as his eyes narrow at me. Alec is quiet as he stares at me for a few moments before he speaks again.
“He is going to kill you, if you are lucky,” he says darkly with a truth that turns my stomach.
I swallow roughly as I nod.
“He won’t be the only one dying today,” I rasp. “For Victor.”
Something flashes in Alec’s eyes as he watches me carefully before nodding.
“Got a plan in mind?”
“Kill him before he kills me.”
He lets out a dry laugh and nods. “Well, that’s a good start, I guess.”
Alec slowly wraps me into a tight hug that only hurts a little. The comfort he provides even briefly far outweighs the pain of my broken and bruised body. When he pulls back, he kisses my forehead and holds my face in his hands.
“I never wanted to see you back here.”
“Trust me, I never wanted to come back. But it’s time. He won’t control my life ever again.”
Alec nods as he takes a step back and hands me a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt that are both way too big for me, but it beats the hell out of the swimsuit that I have been in ever since Luca first confronted me.
I quickly get dressed before Alec pulls out a gun with a silence attached and hands it to me. I check to make sure that the clip is full before I slap it back into place and load the chamber.
I was raised a Bratva Princess. Though Vladimir Chernoff didn’t believe in women in the ranks, he did believe in everyone knowing how to protect themselves. Anyone that couldn’t was a weakness, and he didn’t really care for weaknesses. Alec, Victor and I spent most of our child hoods training to be ultimate killing machines.
When the guys turned 16, they were brought into the fold of things and fully incorporated into the family while I was being primped and displayed like a show pony to other powerful families. Too bad my father’s right hand man always had his eye on me. He tried to get my father to promise me to him, but he refused. I guess he didn’t see any gain for the family if I was married off to someone already in the family.
As soon as my father was killed, Dimitri took over the family and publicly announced that I was to be his bride. I was 18 years old and absolutely terrified. Alec and Victor were outraged and promised that they would never let him near me. They weren’t always around though.
When Victor figured out what was going on behind closed doors during the time leading up to Dimitri and my so called marriage, he went crazy. He promised to get me out. He set everything up for me and was almost successful. Unfortunately, he trusted the wrong people and was exposed to Dimitri. The day that I watched the light drain out of Victor’s eyes was the day that I knew I had to stop waiting for someone else to save me. I had to save myself.
“Where is Alessandro?” I ask quickly, remembering the last few moments before I was knocked out. Please God, tell me he got away.
Alec cocks his head curiously as he folds his arms across his wide chest.
“What is with the kid?”
“What do you mean? Where is he? Did they take him?”
“Yeah, they did. He is here. Veronica has been tasked with watching him. She has been trying to get information out of him, but he won’t say a word. I don’t know if he is tough as nails or scared as shit.”
