Trick shook his head and chuckled to himself. He doubted Jed fucking their waitress was the reason for the delay in getting their food. From the way it looked, several drivers who’d been caught on this side of the accident had opted to backtrack and kill some time at the diner, too.
The waitress in question appeared at their table, balancing a tray with their plates on it. She made sure to touch Jed every chance she got and even graced him with an especially nice view of her cleavage as she bent over to place the ketchup in the center of the table. The guys at the table shared knowing grins and shook their heads. Fucking women in the bathroom was nothing new. They all did it. It was one of the perks of being in a motorcycle club. Women were always throwing themselves at them.
Before Trick could finish his meal, his phone rang. He checked caller ID and saw that it was Lindsey. He hadn’t talked to her in almost four weeks. His heart skipped a beat at what a call from her could mean. Was Keegan all right? “Hello?”
“Hey, Trick. Sorry to bother you, but it’s Wednesday and you’re late.”
Lindsey’s smooth voice had his heart skipping a beat. Fuck, he missed her.
“Wait. What?” He checked the clock on the wall by the cash register. “It’s only 1:00. I still have two hours.”
“We had an early out today. We dismissed at 12:30.”
“Dammit. I’m sorry, Lindsey. I didn’t get the message about an early out.” He ran his hand through his hair trying to figure out what he could do from an hour away.
“Oh. Okay. How long until you can get here then?”
“That’s just it. I thought I had until 3:00 to pick up Keegan. I’m an hour away and the highway is shut down for a multi-car accident. We had to pull over at a diner to wait it out.” Trick rubbed his forehead as he tried to figure out what to do about Keegan. “Let me call my mom to see if she can pick him up and I’ll call you back.” He disconnected and dialed his mom’s number.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Mom. I’m an hour away and I’m sitting at a truck stop waiting for the highway to clear. Keegan had an early out today that I didn’t know about. Is there any way you can pick him up and then get Reagan?”
“Oh, no! I’ve got pies in the oven. I can’t pull them out or leave them. Shoot. And your dad is helping your grandpa move furniture around so Grandma can put up her Christmas tree this weekend.”
Damn. Even if he could get a hold of his dad, it would take him at least thirty minutes to get to Keegan’s school. That was if he even heard his phone ringing. “That’s okay, Mom. Don’t worry about it.” He’d have to try Owen and Bridgette. He told his mom goodbye and hit speed dial for Owen. It went straight to voicemail. Shit. He knew his brother was at work and it was a longshot if he answered his phone. Bridget would be at work, too. Damn it. Even if Trick could find an alternate way home, Keegan would still be stranded at school.
“Shit.” He called Lindsey back so she’d know he was still working on finding someone to pick up Keegan.
“Hello?”
“Hey. I called my mom and she can’t come because she’s got pies in the oven and Dad is helping my grandpa move furniture for my grandma. Then I tried calling Owen but he’s at work and it went to voicemail. And before you say it, no, Michelle cannot come get him. It’s my day and the last thing I want to do is give her something to throw in my face when we go back to court.”
“What about my mom picking up Keegan?” Jackson suggested.
“No. She can’t. She’s working for Bellamy today.” Race shrugged his shoulders at the odd look everyone gave him. “Maverick mentioned it.”
“Damn it.” Trick’s frustration was getting the better of him.
“I can take Keegan,” Lindsey volunteered from the other end of the line. “Trick? Are you there?”
He had to mentally shake his head to clear his brain. He couldn’t possibly have heard what he thought he heard. Lindsey said she would take Keegan? “Um, sorry. Did you just say you could take Keegan?”
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?” He couldn’t have been more shocked if Jed stripped naked and started dancing around the diner like a ballerina. He shivered violently, thinking that was not an image he needed in his head.
“Yes, I’m sure. Besides, from the way it sounds, you’re out of options. If you don’t mind me taking care of him until you get home, I really don’t mind having him.”
“Wow. Thanks, Lindsey. I don’t know what to say. I appreciate it more than you know.” Trick had completely tuned everyone else in the diner out as he tried to wrap his head around what Lindsey was offering. He felt like shit for sucking her back into his life, but he’d learn to quickly get over it considering she was the best, safest option he had at the moment.
“Not a problem.”
“Would you mind picking up Reagan at daycare and taking them both to my house? Keegan knows where the key is hidden.”
“Sure. Call the daycare and let them know I’m coming to get her.”
“I’ll call as soon as I get off here. And thanks again for doing this.”
