“I just had cheesecake,” Lindsey reminded her.
“So. You need to try at least one. I’m taking the rest to my sister’s tomorrow so my nephews can finish them off.”
“Wait. Aren’t you and your sister going shopping tomorrow and leaving them with their dad?” Lindsey asked.
“Yes.” Cami wiggled her brows up and down, smiling mischievously.
“Oh, you’re a bad, bad girl, getting those kids all hopped up on sugar.” Jenna laughed.
“Exactly.”
Cami’s nephews were five, seven and nine, and could be a handful on a good day. “Consider it payback for bailing on their anniversary.”
“I thought he got called in to cover someone’s shift?” Lindsey asked. Cami’s brother-in-law was a firefighter and often picked up extra shifts so that her sister didn’t have to work.
“Yes. He did, but he could have gotten her flowers or had dinner delivered. What’s worse, once he got there, he found out they didn’t need him because some other guy whose wife is pregnant with twins wanted the shift. Instead of coming straight home to salvage their night, a couple of his buddies talked him into going out for a couple of beers.”
“Oooh. That’s not good.” Jenna grimaced.
“No. It’s not. Thus the reason for sugar overload.” She smirked, pleased with her plan. “Now. Try a damn cookie.”
“Oh, fine.” Jenna reached in and took one of the strawberry thumbprint cookies before Cami turned the box toward Lindsey, taunting her by waving it under her nose.
“I don’t even know what this is, but it smells so heavenly.” Lindsey sniffed at the cookie she picked out and took a bite. “Mmm. It tastes like snickerdoodle.”
Cami closed the box and turned toward the kitchen, tossing a “told ya!” over her shoulder.
“You’re not having one?” Lindsey accused.
“No. I had one before you guys got here.” Cami went to get rid of the box and came back with what was left of the wine and placed it on the coffee table amongst the empty plates. She reclined her chair back once more and got comfortable.
“All right. Now spill.” Jenna turned so that her back was leaning against the armrest, her full attention on Lindsey.
“Spill what?” Lindsey couldn’t imagine what she was referring to. Jenna’s only response was to raise a brow, letting her know she wasn’t fooling anyone. That was the downside to having two friends that were as close as real sisters.
“You know exactly what she means. You’ve been stewing on something all night, so you might as well spill.” Cami lowered the footrest on her recliner and sat up, completely focused on Lindsey. She pulled her legs up and angled to the side. Grabbing a throw from the back of the chair, she spread it over her legs and got comfortable.
Lindsey debated on what to tell them. Maybe if she got it all out, she might be able to sleep better tonight. She took a deep breath, held it, then let it rush out. “I saw Trick yesterday.”
“What?” Jenna turned to ask Cami. “Did she say she saw Trick yesterday?”
Cami nodded her head. “Yes. That’s exactly what she said,” she replied, her focus on Lindsey. “Why do I get the feeling that seeing Trick yesterday was not a good thing?”
“Because it wasn’t.” She hadn’t kept her friends in the loop when it came to Trick and her interactions with him. Mostly it was because Cami was such good friends with him and his club brothers. She didn’t want her opinion of him to be tainted by what happened between her and Trick.
“Really?” Cami’s brow reached her hairline and her eyes shot wide. “I really thought you guys hit it off after the night you spent together. That’s why I always try to get you to go with me to the clubhouse.” She reached over and squeezed her hand.
Lindsey stared at her hands where Cami’s rested over hers. “There’s a lot I haven’t told you,” she hedged.
“Start from the beginning,” Jenna encouraged her.
“Okay. Remember the shy boy in my class? Keegan?” They both nodded. “Trick is his dad and the woman with booze on her breath at Open House is Trick’s ex.”
Cami slapped her forehead. “I should have put that together. I knew Trick had a son Keegan.”
“How could you possibly put that together?” Jenna snarked.
“It’s not that common of a name.” When Jenna cocked her brow and pursed her lips, Cami added, “How many have you had in your classes over the years?”
