“Aww. I’m so sorry to hear that.” Jenna reached for her glass of wine and found it still empty. “Anyone need a refill?” she asked as she reached for the bottle. Lindsey and Cami both waved their empty glasses at her in response.
“Damn. I hate that that happened between you two. Of all the guys at the Sons of Redemption club, Trick might seem like a man whore and he might even see himself that way, but I really think if he found the right woman, he’d settle down in a heartbeat.” Cami ran her hand through her hair.
“Why do you say that?” Jenna handed the other women their drinks.
“Because one time when he was drunk off his ass, he admitted to Jackson that he was lonely and wanted a relationship like Jackson has with Calliope.”
“How do you know that?” Jenna got herself situated on her end of the couch once again.
“I accidentally overhead it.”
Lindsey didn’t care how sad that sounded. She couldn’t go down that rabbit hole again. Last night she’d been so close to asking for another chance, but he blew it. Obviously, he hadn’t missed her as much as she had missed him. The scratches down his back proved that. Her phone dinged, drawing her attention. Was there something wrong with her for hoping it was Trick sending her a message? Then she mentally slapped herself for being so back and forth about what she felt for him. She glanced at it and saw it was a text from Kurtis. Her disappointment that it wasn’t Trick had her feeling like she was giving herself whiplash.
“Who is that?” Cami asked.
“Kurtis.”
“Really? What does he want?” It was Jenna’s turn to ask.
“He wants to get together. We still haven’t been able to find a time we can both work with.”
“Well, if you’re done with Trick, maybe you should meet up with him and see what he’s like now,” Jenna suggested.
“I don’t know. I know he had a crush on me a long time ago, so I don’t want to lead him on.” Lindsey wasn’t sure what she should do. But then again, Trick had no problem moving on from her. Should she do as Jenna suggested and see what Kurtis was like now?
“Text him and tell him you’ll meet him. Talk to him. Nothing has to come of it. Right?” Cami surprised Lindsey by pushing for this. She would have thought she’d be on Trick’s side no matter what.
When she hesitated, Cami continued. “You don’t plan on giving Trick a second chance, do you?”
“Well, no.” She really didn’t. Maybe if she kept telling herself that, she’d finally believe it.
“Then go for it. See what Kurtis is like now.” Cami didn’t back down, which had Lindsey wondering why her friend was having such a complete turnaround regarding Trick.
“I don’t know,” she hedged.
“Here,” Cami reached over and grabbed her phone out of her hand. “Let me make it easy for you.” She texted a reply while fending Lindsey off with her other hand. She was laughing when the phone dinged again. “You’re all set.”
“What did you do?” She yanked her phone back and read the screen. “Oh my God. I’m meeting him tomorrow night at the Hillside Cafe?”
“Yes. You meet him there so you have your own ride home in case he turns out to be a weirdo. It’s a public place so there won’t be any pressure to take it further than two friends catching up. Perfect. You’re welcome.” Cami laughed, proud of her handy work.
“Crap. I suppose I might as well get it over with. I did promise we could get together and catch up. He probably wants to rub my nose in the fact he was right about Doug.” Lindsey flopped back on the couch. “I can’t believe you did that.”
“Really? Do you not know me at all?” Cami frowned at her. She would have thought her truly insulted if it weren’t for the fact that her friend was fighting the need to laugh.
“You’re impossible.”
“But you love me,” Cami teased.
“Yeah. Yeah. I love you even though you drive me crazy.”
Lindsey foundan empty parking spot across the street from the Hillside Cafe where she was supposed to meet Kurtis to catch up. They’d tried a couple times before, but the timing had never been right for the both of them. The first time, he’d gotten tied up at work, then they rescheduled for the night she’d had a parent/teacher conference with Trick. Needless to say, after having sex with Trick there was no way she could meet up with Kurtis. That would have been wrong on so many levels.
Uhhh! Why did her every thought always go back to Trick?
She pulled out her phone and texted him that she was here. He immediately texted back that he was also here and already had a table inside. He’d watch for her when she entered.
Lindsey took a deep breath to calm her nerves and exited her car. As she entered, the bell above the door announced her arrival. She looked around and spotted Kurtis standing next to a table at the back, giving her a quick wave. She smiled and headed his direction. At the table, he caught her off guard as he stepped in and kissed her cheek. She felt her face blush and averted her eyes as she took a seat. She wasn’t comfortable with his familiarity. Sure, they’d been friends when they were younger, but he’d never attempted anything like that before. It was awkward since she felt like she knew next to nothing about him now.
