“So, you were telling me what brought you here in the first place,” Race prompted her to get back to her story. He looked Trick’s way then back to Lindsey.
While Race had Lindsey’s attention engaged and calmly sitting at the bar, Trick absently pulled on the shirt he’d been gripping tightly in his fist. He finished zipping and buttoning his jeans, all the while waiting on pins and needles to hear what she had to say.
“I was going to talk to Trick and see if he could forgive me for picking my job over him.” She took a healthy drink, then continued. “Looking back now, I probably should not have had that glass of wine before I came here.”
“One glass?” Race’s brows raised, no doubt thinking the wine on top of the Jack she was drinking here was going to knock her on her ass big time.
“Okay, maybe two glasses. And a half.” She took another drink, appearing to think about it. “All right. All right. Half a bottle and two shots of Johnny Walker.” Race laughed outright at her confession. She groaned and shook her head, clearly disgusted with whatever she was thinking. “I should never have come here. I should have called him and I could have avoided seeing him in athreesome. Asshole.” She whispered the last part.
“Is that so?” Race was having a high time messing with Lindsey. Trick should probably stop him, but she was so damn cute when she was drinking. She let curse words slip and she had absolutely no filter.
“Yep. What has been seen, can never be unseen.” She nodded her head, all serious like.
“Why do you think Trick’s an asshole?” Jed smiled his way as he asked. Trick bit back a growl. Jed was just being an asshole for reminding her that she was mad at him.
“Because he apparently has no problem fucking other women and I can’t stand Kurtis kissing me.”
Trick shoved his hands on his hips, his chest rising and falling at the thought of another man touching what was his.Who the fuck is Kurtis and what is she doing kissing him?
She reached for her glass and found it empty. She frowned like she couldn’t understand how that had happened. She focused on Jed. “Can I have another one, please?”
Jed poured her another one, this time mixing more soda than Jack. Trick moved closer. She took a drink then hummed her approval. “Mmmm. This is good. It makes me think about a beach. Sitting in the sun and sand, drinking and listening to music. Maybe I should take a vacation and head to a beach. That way I don’t have to run into Trick again.”
“Why don’t you want to run into Trick again?” Race asked.
“You seriously have to ask that?” She frowned like he might not be quite as intelligent as she originally thought. “Because I would be mortified to see him after I saw what I saw.”
“And what was that?” Jed cheerfully prodded Lindsey. Again with the reminders. Fucker.
“He was fucking a woman with another guy.” She shook her head and saw Race frown at her response. He wouldn’t like the idea of Lindsey judging his brothers and she must have picked up on that because she hurried to add, “It’s not that he was having a threesome. I have no problem with people doing whatever they want behind closed doors. It’s just that seeing him with someone very clearly states that he has had no problem moving on. I thought that there was something more between us but if he can move on so easily, I must have read it all wrong. I mean think about it. Why would he want a woman like me, when he could have so many others?”
“What do you mean a woman like you?” Race looked confused.
“You know. An elementary school teacher.”
“Lindsey.” Trick’s rough voice interrupted her from behind. He couldn’t listen to anymore and he was getting pissed off the way his brothers were messing with her. They had a lot to talk about and he didn’t want an audience anymore.
“Damn it. How long has he been standing there?” She shot Race an accusatory stare. No one ever looked at Race the way she was right now. “That was a shitty thing to do. Letting him stand there and listen.” One side of Race’s mouth kicked up and he shrugged a shoulder, not really caring what she thought.
“Lindsey,” Trick tried again to get her attention.
“No. You have nothing to say that I want to hear.” She slid off her stool and seemed to be looking for something. “Where’s my phone?”
“You didn’t bring one in with you, Lindsey,” Jed told her.
“Damn it. I need to call a cab. I’ve got to get out of here.” She moved toward the front door and would have tripped if Race hadn’t caught her.
“I can’t let you drive in this condition and you sure as hell are not getting into a cab with some stranger that might take advantage of you while you’re passed out.” She started to open her mouth until he held up his hand. “I’ll drive you home. Come on.”
Race shot Trick a look, a silent communication between the two. His prez took Lindsey by the arm and guided her out the door and to the passenger side of her car. “Where are your keys?” Trick watched helplessly as Race all but poured her into her seat and fastened her seatbelt.
“Ignition,” she mumbled with her eyes closed.
Race walked around the front of the vehicle and got in. He had to move the seat way back in order to accommodate his long legs. Lindsey was passed out before he could start the car. Her head was leaning against the glass and her eyes were closed. Race got back out of the car, leaving the door open. “Get your boots. You can take her home.”
“Thanks.” Trick jogged back to his room, shoved his feet in his boots, grabbed his wallet and phone and hurried back out.
“Good luck, brother.” Jackson patted him on the back as he headed back out the door.
