Page 70 of Trick or Treat

“Can we turn off the lights?” Reagan asked.

“Sure, if you think you can still see your cake.”

Keegan hopped up and turned the lamps off, the only light coming from the TV and the Christmas lights. It was really quite pretty. Keegan hit play and they all settled in to eat cake and watchThe Polar Express. Lindsey couldn’t remember the last time she’d enjoyed an evening so much.

After the movie was finished, he got the kids settled in bed and he walked her to her car. He took her key fob from her and clicked the buttons to make it automatically start. While her car was warming up, he settled his hands on her hips and pinned her back against the car. The metal was cold on her butt, but having Trick leaning into her, she was warm in the front.

“I really had a good time tonight with you and the kids. I’m so glad you invited me over.” She stared up into his face. It was a clear, cold night and the moon was full, lighting up everything around them. He was staring at her mouth as if he wanted nothing more than to kiss her right now. She really hoped he would. His head lowered to hers, his lips soft but firm against hers. His tongue licked along the seam of her mouth and she readily let him in. This kiss was hotter and hungrier than the one he’d treated her to earlier. He pulled her hips into his own, letting her feel the hard length of his erection. He groaned and pulled away.

“Soon.”

“What?” she asked, breathlessly.

“Not tonight, but soon.”

“Oh, um. Okay.” She cleared her throat and mentally shook herself out of her Trick-induced stupor. “You want to come over tomorrow night for chili? I’ll need to make a trip to the store for a few things.”

“Yeah. Sounds good. Wait until I get there and we’ll go to the store together.” He leaned down and kissed her again before pulling her away from the car so that he could open the door and gently push her to get in.

“Goodnight, baby. Drive safe.” He closed her door and waited until she was on her way before he headed back inside.

She touched her lips with the tips of her fingers. She could still taste him on her lips. Damn, the man could kiss. All the way home, all she could think about was the way he said “soon.”

“You have gotto be kidding me.” Kurtis couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Seriously? Lindsey was with that same biker he’d seen her with once before. Didn’t she learn her lesson with Doug?

Huh. He guessed that was why she’d been avoiding him after he’d gotten her and her friends into Bliss. He’d wanted to impress her with his money and connections. It wasn’t everyday someone was let into the constantly packed club. People waited in line for hours just hoping to get in for a few minutes. To think he’d wasted the time and effort on Lindsey and her two friends. That one friend of hers, Cami, was a real piece of work. She liked to pretend she was some fine, upstanding business owner, but he knew the truth. She spent a lot of her time hanging out with that motorcycle club, the Sons of Redemption, fucking every single one of them he imagined. The club wasn’t exactly known for a chaste lifestyle.

He watched Lindsey turn down an aisle and the biker guy kept going. Perfect. Kurtis followed her down the aisle and spotted her standing in front of the canned vegetables, putting cans of chili beans and red kidney beans in her cart, completely oblivious to her surroundings. That neglect could cost her one day.

“Lindsey.” He watched her jump and her hand flew to her chest.

“Kurtis. You scared the crap out of me.” She looked around, searching both ends of the aisles for her friend.

He kind of got off on the fact that she was so nervous around him. Something deep inside of her was telling her Kurtis wasn’t completely safe to be around. Sadly, she didn’t listen to that inner voice where Doug was concerned either. She really should learn to listen to that voice.

He’d spent two years in high school befriending her, helping her pass chemistry class. Then she’d met Doug right before she was leaving for college and he’d tried to warn her about his cheating, but she wouldn’t listen. The last time he’d told her about Doug and his current affair, she’d all but shouted in his face that he was lying. He thought coming back here, new and improved, he’d finally get her to see him in a different light. He should have known better. Lindsey would never change. She had a thing for bad boys, or men that were bad for her in general. Maybe he should show her just how bad he could be?

“I saw you with that biker guy again. You seeing him now?” Kurt took a step forward, his head bent.

“Well, yes.” Lindsey’s face paled as he took another step forward, causing her to back up into the shelving behind her.

“Were you with him the night I got you and your friends into Bliss? Are you trying to string us both along?” He settled on hand on the shelving next to her head.

“N-no. Of course not.”

“I can’t believe you didn’t understand my intentions after that kiss we shared. Did you not understand that I wanted us to give it a shot and see if something more than friends could be between us?” He kept his voice low and even, which by the way she was acting, was worse than if he was shouting at her.

“Kurtis, you know I’ve only ever considered you a friend. I have never knowingly led you to believe that we would ever be more than friends. Where is this coming from?” She licked her lips nervously, her eyes darting from one end of the aisle to the other, no doubt hoping her knight in black leather would come to her rescue.

“Where is this coming from? I spent two years in high school becoming your friend, tutoring you in chemistry our senior year. I even warned you about who Doug really was and what did you do? You married the prick anyway. What the hell is wrong with you?”

Lindsey stood with a can of beans in each hand at chest level. The only way those cans would save her would be if she were to hit him upside the head with them. Fortunately, he knew she wasn’t a violent kind of person and needn’t worry.

“Then,” he continued, lowering his face level with hers, “I come back here, looking and acting nothing like when I was that pathetic loser in school and you still won’t give me a shot?”

“Kurtis, I don’t know what you want me to say.” Lindsey’s voice was barely above a whisper.

He stepped closer until the only thing keeping them from touching chest to chest was two cans of beans. “I can’t believe that after everything you went through with Doug, you’d hitch your wagon to a criminal in leather.”
