Green eyes flashed in that lupine face as I shifted in midair, the wolf ripping free and my wings vanishing once more.
I ripped into the intruder, sending the wolf backwards.
He circled me, one green eye on the queen.
Odragir huffed out a laughing bark.
Time to come home, Lucifer.
Chapter45
Lilith
One moment I was in Lucifer’s arms, marveling at his new wings and the adorable puffy feathers.
The next, he’d been torn away from me while I went flying away from the force of the impact. A huge wolf that I’d recognized even in the dark, thanks to those green flames in his eyes, had attacked.
Odragir.
Oh, once this was over, I was going to give Lucifer the biggest fucking “I told you so” of all time.
I knew we should have left, but nooooo. Don’t listen to Lilith, she has no idea what she’s talking about.
I shoved to my feet, livid that this fucking asshole had dared to intrude on our moment.
Staring as they fought, my anger grew with every blow exchanged. Lucifer should have taken him out by now, why was he letting this fight drag on like this?
Now that he had his wings—
Oh my god, he couldn’t use them in wolf form. That was why he was fighting as he always had, but with Odragir getting the drop on us, he’d managed to throw off Lucifer’s equilibrium.
And now, without Asmodeus’s constraints on their fight, death was on the table.
Lucifer jumped back from a swipe of Odragir’s deadly claws, but he seemed… almost dizzy.
Not only had the surprise thrown him off, but the weight of his newly returned wings seemed to be affecting him, even in wolf form. The glossy sheen of feathers was mixed in with his fur.
Odragir barreled into him, his sharp teeth snapping at Lucifer’s throat.
Far too close for my peace of mind. I had no weapons at hand, nothing to help turn the tide of the fight.
But Lucifer tore into the other wolf, head lowered and teeth bared as he snarled ferociously at the Spectral beast.
I ducked around the campfire, searching for fuckinganythingto help, but there was only the sad pile of twigs we’d collected.
My heart clenched like a vise as Odragir rebounded.
His jaws yawned wide, teeth already painted with blood, but Lucifer ducked aside—
And in his state of unbalance, his paw snagged on a root, holding him fast for a single precious second.
Odragir lunged, letting out an unearthly howl.
“No!” Faster than I’d known I could move, I ran for them, and leapt onto Odragir’s back, digging my fingers into bloodied fur.
It was like trying to ride an incredibly pissed off bronco hyped up on PCP.
I clung for all I was worth as he bucked, contorting himself to snap at any limb I left exposed.
